Susan Eloise Hinton was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on July 22, 1950. Hinton began reading and writing at a young age, despite the fact that there was little to do for a child growing up in Tulsa. The shy girl had aspirations of being a cattle rancher before deciding to pursue a literary career. Hinton acquired a love of books as a teenager in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but considered her options limited and uninspiring. Hinton’s father was stricken with cancer when she was a junior in high school, a dreadful and frequently fatal condition.
Hinton turned to write to help her cope with her father’s illness. Hinton wrote a book called The Outsiders at this time. The Outsiders is based on events that occurred at her Tulsa high school and depicts a rivalry between two gangs, the lower-middle-class “greasers” and the upper-class “socs” (for Socials), that results in the deaths of members of both gangs.
The Outsiders, narrated by Ponyboy, a sensitive, orphaned greaser who tells the story in retrospect (after the events have occurred), explores the friendship, loyalty, and affection that lie beneath the gang mystique while highlighting both the similarities in the opposing groups’ feelings and the futility of gang violence. Ponyboy discovers that he does not have to be an outcast as a result of his interactions with death. As a result of the novel’s portrayal of a rebellious adolescent, it is now considered both a classic of juvenile literature and a unique achievement for such a young writer.
More than four million copies of The Outsiders were sold in the United States alone, making it a huge hit among teenagers. Hinton was able to attend the University of Tulsa because of the book’s popularity, where she got a degree in education in 1970 and met her future husband, David Inhofe. At the age of eighteen, though, Hinton struggled with writer’s block for several years. Ten years passed before Hinton published her next novel, Taming the Star Runner (1986), during which she advised on the sets of various film versions of her works and started a family with her husband and two children.
She also collaborated with Francis Ford Coppola on the screenplay for the film adaptation of Rumble Fish. Young Adult Services Division/School Library Journal Author Award, American Library Association, ’88, for Hinton As a young adult novelist, Hinton hasn’t published nearly as many books as some of her contemporaries. Tex and The Outsiders, two of the films adapted from her books, were made in response to recommendations from youngWhile Hinton no longer lives in the adolescent environment she writes, she believes she is well-suited to create adolescent fiction.
In an interview with Dave Smith of the Los Angeles Times, she said, “I don’t think I have a masterpiece in me, but I know I’m writing effectively in my chosen field.” “I have a good understanding of children, and I enjoy spending time with them. Aside from that, I have a great memory. What it was like to be a teenager that no one listened to, paid attention to, or wanted around me, I remember well now. Even though my family was different, I knew a lot of kids like that and spent time with them.
I’ve always been able to relate to them in some way. They were exactly the type of people I enjoy spending time with.”In 1995, Hinton published her debut picture book, Big David, Little David, and two books for younger readers, Puppy Sister and Big David, Little David. Her husband and son, Nicholas David, live in northern California with the highly reclusive Hinton.
