Actor, director, and producer, Sidney Poitier was born on February 20, 1927, in Miami, Florida, the U.S. He was the first African-American actor to win an Academy Award for best actor (for Lilies of the Field [1963]) and the first Black movie star in the United States of America. By rejecting roles based on racial stereotypes, he redefined roles for African Americans.
The actor Sidney Poitier was born too soon in the United States, where his parents were vacationing from the Bahama Islands. While some sources claim he was born in 1924, the majority of sources, including Poitier’s own words, say he was actually born in 1927. He grew up in the Bahamas on Cat Island, but when he was a teenager, he moved back to the United States, where he enlisted in the military and worked as a medic during World War II.
As soon as he was released from prison, he began applying to theatre companies across the country, including the American Negro Theatre in New York City. In spite of his burgeoning film career, Sidney Poitier continued to work in live theatre, and in 1959, his performance as the narrator in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun earned him a Tony Award. He also appeared in the drama’s film adaptation, which was released in 1961.
It was Poitier’s role as a black dockworker in the gripping drama Edge of the City (1957) that got him in trouble with his racist union boss for his friendship with a white one (John Cassavetes). Race relations were also explored in 1957’s Band of Angels. Poitier played a rebellious overseer whose boss (Clark Gable) buys the daughter (Yvonne De Carlo) of a once-wealthy family who, after her father’s death, discovers she is part Black and is sold into slavery in the melodrama set during the American Civil War.
A white inmate (Tony Curtis) helps him escape prison in The Defiant Ones (1958), and the two must overcome their racial prejudices to stay out of trouble. A controversial film at the time, it earned Poitier an Academy Award nomination for best actor; he was the first African-American male performer to receive an Oscar nomination for the lead role. His performance in Porgy and Bess (1959), in which he played the disabled Porgy and fell in love with the drug-addicted drug addict Bess (Dorothy Dandridge), earned him critical acclaim.
Poitier went on to star in a number of other critically acclaimed films after his role in the 1966 western Duel at Diablo. He played a charismatic inner-city schoolteacher into Sir, with Love (1967), earning the respect of his students.
