Sidney Poitier Bio

Actor, director, and producer, Sidney Poitier was born on February 20, 1927, in Miami, Florida, the U.S. He was the first African-American actor to win an Academy Award for best actor (for Lilies of the Field [1963]) and the first Black movie star in the United States of America. By rejecting roles based on racial stereotypes, he redefined roles for African Americans.

The actor Sidney Poitier was born too soon in the United States, where his parents were vacationing from the Bahama Islands. While some sources claim he was born in 1924, the majority of sources, including Poitier’s own words, say he was actually born in 1927. He grew up in the Bahamas on Cat Island, but when he was a teenager, he moved back to the United States, where he enlisted in the military and worked as a medic during World War II.

As soon as he was released from prison, he began applying to theatre companies across the country, including the American Negro Theatre in New York City. In response to being turned down for a position due to his British accent, he spent six months perfecting his American enunciation by listening to British radio announcers’ accents.

When he was accepted again, he began acting classes and appeared in several ANT productions while studying. Lysistrata was his Broadway debut performance, which occurred in 1946. Alfred Hitchcock’s suspenseful thriller Rear Window stars Grace Kelly and James Stewart as neighbors who are being spied on (1954). Even so, there has been publicity.

As Dr. Luther Brooks, a Black doctor who treats a racist white criminal in No Way Out, Poitier got his first break in movies (1950). Poitier and the Black actors who followed him broke new ground by refusing roles that played to racial stereotypes, pushing Hollywood’s boundaries, and breaking into the mainstream of American culture. Poitier’s next role was as a reverend in Alan Paton’s novel Cry, the Beloved Country (1951), an adaptation in which he played a black South African murder victim.

Gregory Miller, an alienated high school student in Evan Hunter’s novel The Blackboard Jungle, was another of his notable early roles (1954). In spite of his burgeoning film career, Sidney Poitier continued to work in live theatre, and in 1959, his performance as the narrator in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun earned him a Tony Award. He also appeared in the drama’s film adaptation, which was released in 1961.

It was Poitier’s role as a black dockworker in the gripping drama Edge of the City (1957) that got him in trouble with his racist union boss for his friendship with a white one (John Cassavetes). Race relations were also explored in 1957’s Band of Angels. Poitier played a rebellious overseer whose boss (Clark Gable) buys the daughter (Yvonne De Carlo) of a once-wealthy family who, after her father’s death, discovers she is part Black and is sold into slavery in the melodrama set during the American Civil War.

A white inmate (Tony Curtis) helps him escape prison in The Defiant Ones (1958), and the two must overcome their racial prejudices to stay out of trouble. A controversial film at the time, it earned Poitier an Academy Award nomination for best actor; he was the first African-American male performer to receive an Oscar nomination for the lead role. His performance in Porgy and Bess (1959), in which he played the disabled Porgy and fell in love with the drug-addicted drug addict Bess (Dorothy Dandridge), earned him critical acclaim.

Poitier went on to star in a number of other critically acclaimed films after his role in the 1966 western Duel at Diablo. He played a charismatic inner-city schoolteacher into Sir, with Love (1967), earning the respect of his students. There’s also Rod Steiger’s crime drama In the Heat of the Night (1967), about a bigoted white Southern police chief and an intellectual Black Philadelphia detective named Virgil Tibbs (Poitier).

With an Oscar for Best Picture, Poitier went on to reprise his role in films such as You Can’t Call Me by Your First Name (1970) and They Call Me Mister Tibbs! (1971). Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, another 1967 Poitier film, featured him as the fiancé of a white woman (Katharine Houghton) who brings him home to meet her liberal parents. Poitier played (Spencer Tracy, in his last film, and Katharine Hepburn). Poitier became the year’s biggest box office draw as a result of the films’ success.

It was with Buck and the Preacher, a lighthearted western in which Poitier played a con-man preacher, that he made his directorial debut in 1972. Poitier appeared in his directorial debut, A Warm December (1973), as a widowed doctor who falls in love with a woman suffering from sickle cell anemia (Esther Anderson).

Neither film did well at the box office, but Uptown Saturday Night (1974), a comedy starring Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby and Harry Belafonte, was a huge hit. Let’s Do It Again (1975) and A Piece of the Action (1976) saw Poitier reunited with Cosby (1977). Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor starred as two losers who are mistakenly sent to prison in Stir Crazy (1980), which was a huge box-office success without Poitier.

He had less success with Wilder-Gilda Radner’s team-up film Hanky Panky (1982) and breakdance musical Fast Forward (1985). As previously mentioned, Poitier re-hired Cosby for his final directorial outing, Ghost Dad (1990), but that effort fell short of their prior successes. He was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the United States government in 2009. These are Poitier’s journals: This Life (1980), and The Measure of a Man (1985). (2000).
