Skip Bayless Bio

Skip Bayless was born on December 4, 1951, in Oklahoma City, United States, to his father, John Sr., who, together with his wife, owned and operated a restaurant known as ‘Hickory House.’ John Edward Bayless II was named after the eatery. Not long after he was born, his father gave him the moniker “Skip,” which is short for “skipper of the ship.” Since then, everyone has referred to him as “Skip.”

Rick Bayless, his younger brother, is a well-known celebrity chef, restaurateur, and television personality. Additionally, Bayless has a younger sister. Bayless received his education at the ‘Northwest Classen High School,’ where he was elected to the presidency of the ‘Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter at his school. In the class of 1970, he graduated in second place overall and was named the class’s salutatorian. He excelled so well in high school that he was invited to join the prestigious “National Honor Society.” At a young age, Bayless showed an interest in participating in athletics.

He was active on the baseball and basketball teams during his senior year. During the ‘Oklahoma Boys State program, he represented his school. American sports writer, investigative sports journalist, author, and TV personality Skip Bayless is most known for his work in the sports media. While growing up, he worked at the restaurant his family owned. While Bayless pursued a career in athletics, his brother Rick continued the family business by becoming a famous chef. After writing for the newspapers of his high school and university, he pursued a career in journalism.

He went on to work for publications such as “The Miami Herald,” “The Los Angeles Times,” “The Dallas Morning News,” and “The Dallas Times Herald.” He is now a columnist for “The Dallas Morning News.” In 1989, he moved to television and began hosting programs, first for ‘ESPN’ (most notably ‘First Take’) and then for ‘Fox Sports’ (‘Skip and Shannon: Undisputed’). The articles Bayless has written on sports have been published in various significant sports journals, such as ‘Sports Illustrated.’ Although he did some work at the restaurant that his family owned, he always considered sports to be his primary field of labor.

During his time in high school, Bayless served as an official for the Letterman’s Club and contributed to the sports section of his school newspaper. After that, Bayless used the ‘Grantland Rice Scholarship’ to further his education at Vanderbilt University. He was a member of the ‘Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and served as the sports director of the chapter’s organization. In addition, he was the editor of “The Hustler,” the student newspaper published by the institution, and he completed an internship at “The Daily Oklahoma” in 1969.

Bayless received his diploma in 1974 and majored in English and history. After this, he started his work life off by becoming a sports writer. At the beginning of his career, Bayless worked as a sports journalist for ‘The Miami Herald.’ In 1976, he became a sports investigative journalist for the ‘Los Angeles Times.’ As part of his responsibilities in that role, he looked into the controversy surrounding the Major League Baseball club, the Los Angeles Dodgers, its top player, Steve Garvey, and Cyndy Garvey, a celebrity and the player’s wife.

Bayless looked into Carroll Rosenbloom’s (the owner of the American football club known as the ‘Los Angeles Rams’) plan to test out a different quarterback each week. After spending three years contributing to the sports section of “The Dallas Morning News,” Bayless found employment at “The Dallas Times Herald.” The writings of Bayless attracted the attention of ‘The Wall Street Journal,’ which led to the publication’s decision to commission him to write a story for them. In his debut book, titled “God’s Coach: The Hymns, Hype, and Hypocrisy of Tom Landry’s Cowboys,” Bayless used the investigative journalism abilities he had acquired throughout his career.

This book, first published in 1989, detailed the history of the ‘National Football League’ (NFL) squad known as the ‘Dallas Cowboys.’ The following year, he started his tenure on the discussion program ‘The Sports Reporters,’ which is broadcast on ESPN and is hosted by Dick Schaap. Bayless started his career as a sports talk show presenter on the radio station KLIF in Dallas in 1991. The program aired for a total of two years. The year after, he participated in national sports discussions for the ‘Knights of the Roundtable parts of ‘NFL Prime Monday.’

Bayless produced his second book, titled “The Boys: The Untold Story of the Dallas Cowboys’ Season on the Edge,” after the resurgence of the “Dallas Cowboys” and their triumph in the “Super Bowl” in 1993 inspired him. After the club won another “Super Bowl,” he went on to write the controversial book “Hell-Bent: The Crazy Truth About the “Win or Else” Dallas Cowboys,” which was the third installment in his series of books on the Cowboys. After that, Bayless began his career in the production of radio broadcasts. Starting in 1994 and continuing until 1996, he was the presenter of the radio program “The Skip Bayless Show” on the Fort Worth radio station known as “KTCK” (“The Ticket”).

After the station was purchased by ‘Cumulus Media’ in 1996, his employment ended, and he was let go from his contract. Around this time, Bayless made multiple guest appearances on ‘The Fabulous Sports Babe,’ the first program on ‘ESPN Radio.’ After that, he uprooted his life and relocated to Chicago, where he became a regular guest on the ‘Sporting News Radio show known as ‘Coppock On Sports.’

Bayless left the ‘Dallas Times Herald’ in 1998 to become the ‘Chicago Tribune’ lead sports writer. He gave his best effort in sports commentary over the following two years, beginning with major golf tournaments for the NBC-owned channel known as the “Golf Channel.” In July of 2001, he resigned from his position at the ‘Chicago Tribune’ and soon after started appearing as a guest presenter on the nationally syndicated radio show ‘The Jim Rome Show.’ After that, he became a guest on an ESPN Radio weekend program hosted by Larry Beil as a sports talk show presenter.
