Stanley Burrell is a well-known professional basketball player from the United States who most recently played in the Polish Basketball League for Energa Czarni Supsk. His height of 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 meters) allows him to play the point guard position. At Xavier University, Burrell was coached throughout his collegiate basketball career by Sean Miller (Cincinnati, OH).
Burrell was born to Wonda and Stanley Burrell in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Burell and his brother, James Burrell, were left in the care of their mother in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she was reared. This was because Burell’s parents split while he was still a child. Burrell attended Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. He led the team in scoring as a senior with 20.9 points per game and helped them to a sectional championship in 2003 and a regional runner-up finish against Pike High School.
Pike High School was the school that won the regional title. In 2003, Burrell was recognized as the Star West Player of the Year and selected for the Indiana All-Star Team. Upon the conclusion of his studies in high school, he committed to attending Xavier University by signing a National Letter of Intent.
After Burrell finished his high school education at Ben Davis, he did not immediately enroll at Xavier University. Instead, for the 2003–2004 school year, he was a student at Hargrave Military School. There, he improved both his game and his physique in preparation for making an instant contribution to Xavier. The Prep-school National Championship was won by Burrell, who had a scoring average of 15.50 points each game.
When Burrell entered Xavier University for his first year (2004–2005), he was prepared to make an early impact on the team. He averaged 12.7 points per game as a rookie, which was good enough to lead Xavier in scoring. He is the third rookie player in the sport’s history to achieve that accomplishment. The All-Rookie Team and the All-Championship Team for the Atlantic 10 were composed of him after the conference’s championship game.
Xavier’s success in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament and subsequent qualification for the NCAA Tournament came during his sophomore year (2005–2006). Again, Burrell was Xavier’s leader in scoring, averaging 14.4 points per game, and also led the team in assists, dishing out 3.3 a contest. He was selected to the All-Conference Team for the Atlantic 10 (A10).
During the 2006–2007 school year, Xavier’s junior year, he led his team to a regular season title in the Atlantic 10. He earned another place in the NCAA Tournament (but lost in the round of 32 vs. Ohio State University). Burrell was the second top scorer on the squad, averaging 12.4 points per contest, and he was also the second leading assister, dishing out 2.4 assists per contest. He was again honored with a spot on the All-Conference Team for the Atlantic 10.
During his final year of college basketball (2007–08), Xavier won its third straight Atlantic 10 Championship and received an additional bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year was awarded to Burrell after he established himself as one of the best defenders in the country. Also, he was providing 9.7 points and 3.8 assists per game on a per-game basis.
Because of his outstanding defensive play, Seth Davis of Sports Illustrated and CBS named Burrell the Captain of the ninth annual “All-Glue” Team in a SI.com essay during his senior season. This brought Burrell widespread recognition. Burrell’s peers throughout the country composed the National Defensive All-America and National All-Defensive First Team.
After receiving his degree in Communications and Liberal Arts from Xavier University, Burrell participated in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in Virginia (where he tied the record for most assists in one game with 13 assists), as well as the 2008 NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Florida. Both of these events took place in the United States.
KK Bosna of the Adriatic League has signed Burrell to his first contract as a professional basketball player. The deal is for one year. In just 17 games, Burrell posted a 9.7-point scoring average and 2.4 assist average each contest. In January 2009, Burrell parted ways with the organization and signed a contract to play with the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League for the rest of the season. Since he joined the Toros so late in the season, Burrell could only serve in a reserve capacity for the team. He finished each game with an average of 6.5 points and 2.0 assists. During that season, the Toros advanced to the semifinals of the D-League playoffs.
After spending May 2009 participating in a free-agent camp with the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association, Burrell signed his second professional deal with the Royal Basket Club Verviers-Pepinster of the Basketball League Belgium for one year (BLB). In the 31 games he played in, Burrell had an assist total of 142, putting him in first place in the Belgian League in that category. After the conclusion of the 2009–10 season, Generali Okapi Aalstar of the Basketball League Belgium signed Burrell to a contract for one year. Burrell had been playing for Pepinster (BLB).
In 2010, Burrell started his third season as a point guard in the professional basketball league playing for Generali Okapi Aalstar. In 2011, Burrell signed a contract with the Polish League club Energa Czarni Slupsk, where he led the team in scoring with an average of 15.6 points per game and 4.6 assists per game. In 2012, Burrell acquired a contract to play for Bremerhaven of the German League. He was the team’s leading scorer, averaging 16.2 points per game and dishing out 4.3 assists per game.
His contract with Royal Hal Gaziantep was signed on July 9, 2013. January 2014 saw Burrell sign a contract with the Israeli League’s Bnei Herzliya team. In 2014, Burrell signed an agreement to play with the Hitachi Sunrockers, a Japanese League team. Tsmoki-Minsk of the Belarusian Premier League was the team he eventually signed for on December 15, 2014. After leaving Minsk on February 17, 2015, he secured a contract to play in the Israeli League with Hapoel Gilboa Galil.
In 2015, Burrell signed a contract to play with Apoel, which competes in the Cyprus League… The following month, in January 2016, he transferred to the Olaj Szolnok team, which competes in the Eurocup… In the Eurocup, he scored 15.2 points per game and 4.4 assists per game. After signing a contract with the organization, Burrel joined the Polish team Energa Czarni Supsk on July 27, 2016. After participating in three games for the club, he decided to leave.
