Tampa Bay Buccaneers Bio

Ted McClowsky, a Philadelphia-based construction industry entrepreneur, acquired the Buccaneers in 1976, and the team was born. After McClowsky came into financial issues, he was promptly replaced by a rich tax attorney called Hugh Culverhouse. The name “Buccaneers” was picked for the squad in a Name-The-Team contest. The Buccaneers joined the NFC West in the NFL’s first season. The Buccaneers hired John McKay, a former USC head coach, as their first head coach.

The Buccaneers were treated unfairly in the Expansion draught, as they were left with a slew of out-of-work veterans and untalented free agents. Although McKay is an excellent coach, the Buccaneers were completely out of it and didn’t even try. Despite being moved to the NFC Central, the Buccaneers’ fortunes remained the same in 1977 as they lost a league-record 26 consecutive games until beating the New Orleans Saints in their first game.

For the first time in franchise history, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished 10-6 in 1979 on route to a playoff berth. RB Ricky Bell, Future Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon on defense, and Doug Williams led the team. A tiebreaker against the Chicago Bears gave them their first NFC North championship. They beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs and hosted the NFC Championship Game against the St. Louis Rams. That game would be a 9-0 rout for them.

The Buccaneers were 5-10-1 in 1980, which placed them last in the division. After a 0-2 start, the Buccaneers were forced to wait seven weeks due to a player’s strike. The Bucs were dubbed the “Cardiac Kids” after winning five of their last six games, all in the closing seconds, to finish 5-4 and make the playoffs when the league resumed play.

The Buccaneers met the Cowboys in the first round, but this time they played considerably better at home in Dallas, leading the game at the half. The Buccaneers were beaten 30-17 by the New Orleans Saints. Despite the Bucs’ pleadings, Doug Williams requested a $400,000 salary rise after the season and was denied it, leading to his departure for the USFL.

A bankruptcy filing by Hugh Culverhouse’s son after his death placed the team’s future in doubt, at least in Tampa Bay. Hugh, Jr. Culverhouse originally intended to sell the franchise to one of two potential buyers: George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees, or Peter Angelos, owner of the Baltimore Orioles.

To everyone’s surprise, however, local entrepreneur and billionaire Malcolm Glazer won the bidding war and paid a record-breaking $192 million for the team. After that, he handed the franchise over to his sons, and the Bucs were finally able to compete for thanks to the family’s huge money and strong devotion to producing a successful team in Tampa.

In 1999, rookie QB Shaun King and the Buccaneers’ defense surprised everyone with a strong season. That year, the Bucs’ defense was the best in the league, and Shaun King helped the club win its third straight Central Division crown, this time with a record of 10-6. They advanced to the playoffs by defeating the Washington Redskins in the first round but lost to the St. Louis Rams 13-6 in the following round in a contentious game.

Bucs ownership was persuaded by the team’s improvement since 2007 that head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen would be retained through the 2011 campaign. Despite the fact that many of its supporting players would be lost, the team’s nucleus would be retained for the 2008 season. After dropping their last four games of the season, the Buccaneers missed the playoffs that year.

Following that hire of Mike Sullivan as offensive coordinator, the Buccaneers brought in Bill Sheridan as defensive coordinator and Schiano’s longtime friend from his days at the University of Miami as well as former University of North Carolina head coach Butch Davis to serve as a major advisor to the head coach.

Tampa Bay signed former Washington Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson, former Dallas Cowboys defender J. J. Wilcox (who was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers), former New York Jets kicker Nick Folk, and veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick on March 9, according to the team.

On January 8, 2019, the Buccaneers announced the appointment of Bruce Arians as their next head coach after the firing of Dirk Koetter. After five seasons as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, Arians retired in 2017. He had been out of coaching for a year. For the rights to Arians, Tampa Bay agreed to trade a sixth-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft and Arizona’s seventh-round choice in the same draught to the Cardinals, who were still under contract with him until the conclusion of the 2019 season. On the same day, the Buccaneers hired former Cardinals offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich as offensive coordinator. The next day, the Buccaneers hired Todd Bowles, the former head coach of the New York Jets.

As well as signing Fournette and former Bengals running back Giovani Bernard, the Buccaneers retained all 22 of their starters from the 2020 Super Bowl title season in the 2021 free agency period. The Buccaneers re-signed all 22 starters from their Super Bowl squad, whereas every other club’s roster altered during the pay cap period (1994).
