Terry Wayne Fator is a well-known performer in ventriloquism, impressionism, stand-up comedy, and singing in the United States. He was born in Dallas, Texas, and at an early age, he discovered that he was talented in singing and ventriloquism. He also acquired an interest in performing magic. Fator began playing with two different bands but later transitioned to a solo career, during which he combined singing, ventriloquism, and stand-up comedy.
His victory in the second season of America’s Got Skill, which he went on to win, catapulted his career to new heights and brought him global exposure for his skill. As a result of his popularity, he was offered a contract for several millions of dollars and five years to headline events in Las Vegas, Nevada. At the Mirage in Las Vegas, he was the featured performer from 2009 to 2020.
Since 2021, he has maintained a consistent performance schedule at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino. He has helped contribute to humanitarian causes by performing and using his ability in various ways. Fator has often been listed among the top five highest-paid comedians in the world. A few weeks later, Fator went to Sears and bought a Willie Talk dummy. Not long after, he performed at a church picnic and won a prize of $25 for his act.
When Fator was ten, his parents bought him his first ventriloquism dummy. Fator kept his family and friends amused throughout his youth by doing ventriloquism and impersonations of famous singers and performers. When Fator was 18 years old, his mother gave him the first puppet she had ever purchased for him after she had saved her money for three years.
Fator started touring as the lead vocalist of the band “Freedom Jam” in 1987–1988, which Young American Showcase sponsored. The band performed at over 200 high schools and middle schools throughout the United States and Canada, giving an average of roughly three performances every school day.
Midway through 1988, he joined the showband known as “Texas the Band” as the main vocalist, and he began adding his puppet Walter T. Airedale into his performances. After a prominent album company representative saw that Fator sang songs by imitating their original singers, the representative requested that Fator sing in his voice. As a result, the band abandoned their aspirations to sign to the major record label.
After Fator left the band, he started performing solo performances that blended humor with ventriloquism, but it took him many years to break through to the point where he could call himself successful. In addition to being required to run events at fairs and sometimes suffering from heat stroke when ordered to do routines during hot afternoons, he also had a setback in one performance when just one person attended his act in a theater with 1,000 seats.
Fator was discouraged and considering choosing another job; nevertheless, his family urged him to persevere in his current endeavor and not give up. Impersonations were later included in his routines when he appeared on “Friends in Low Places” in 2005. This choice finally proved fruitful, earning him positive feedback from the crowd and giving him reason to have optimism.
Because of this, Fator has been rewriting his routines to include the components of his performance that were such a hit initially and will continue to be so in the future. His popularity later led to invitations to play at General Motors and AT&T’s corporate parties and serve as an opening act for Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, Neal McCoy, and Styx. He also served as a judge on the American Idol reality show.
Following his victory, it was revealed on the program that, in connection with his success, he would be making an appearance at the Jubilee Theatre located inside Bally’s Las Vegas. However, each advertisement was only supposed to be 15 minutes long, so the proposal was scrapped in conjunction with his management team and Bally’s.
In April 2007, Fator performed at the 60th birthday party held in honor of Christian singer Larry Norman. Later, Fator invited Larry as an honored guest to the tapings of America’s Got Talent and his first performance at the Las Vegas Hilton. After winning America’s Got Talent in 2007, Fator had two performances at the Las Vegas Hilton on October 14 and 15, both very popular and completely sold out.
In December, he continued to play there in several events. In the same month, he secured a deal with the Las Vegas Hilton for $1.5 million to perform three concerts each month from January 2008 through May 2008 at the Las Vegas Hilton. In the same year, 2007, Fator joined the Friends of Ronald McDonald House Charities as a celebrity board member and became an official supporter of the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Fator appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show on March 17, 2008, with Simon Cowell, a judge on American Idol and the founder and executive producer of America’s Got Talent. Winfrey was utterly taken aback when Cowell referred to Fator as one of the “two most talented people on the planet.” Fator appeared with three of his dummies, while country artist Walter T. Airedale sang a song by Garth Brooks, and an imitation turtle named Winston sang by the Bee Gees.
