He is most recognized for his role as Bernie, the late protagonist of the comedies Weekend at Bernie’s and Weekend at Bernie’s II, in which he played Bernie after his death. Kiser was born in Elmhurst, Illinois, on August 1, 1939, but grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. He was awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Kansas, where he played college football. In 1962, he received his diploma as a graduate of the industrial engineering program. After moving back to Omaha, he continued his acting career while working as an engineer for three years.
During these years, Kiser appeared as an amateur actor in more than 50 plays. In 1965, after receiving guidance from a theatre instructor, he pursued acting full-estimated in New York City. He began his training at the Actors Studio under the direction of Lee Strasberg.
Kiser’s first two years in New York were filled with minor roles, ranging from those in theater to those in television and commercials. By 1967, Kiser had already garnered considerable acclaim for his body of work, earning both an Obie Award and a Theater World Award for his performances in Fortune and Men’s Eyes.
Kiser became a life member of The Actors Studio and was a recurring character on soap operas, including The Doctors and The Secret Storm. In 1978, he had starring roles in The Roller Girls and Sugar Time! Comedies, both of which were canceled after a brief run. Kiser had guest appearances on several television shows throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, including Three’s Company, One Day at a Time, The Love Boat, Night Court, 227, Maude, and The Golden Girls.
In one of his appearances, he appeared in Hill Street Blues’ television program as the comic Vic Hitler. He was a member of the ensemble on Carol Burnett’s Carol & Company, which first aired in 1990, and was a cast member on the sketch comedy program Off the Wall, which was syndicated.
