Vera Farmiga Bio

American actress and director Vera Farmiga. She has starred in many successful movies, including “Up in the Air” and “The Conjuring.” Her role in “Bates Motel” made her a household name. She spent her formative years studying folk dance and classical piano in New Jersey. She was a timid kid who eventually found her voice in theater; she majored in art at “Syracuse University.” She started performing soon after and quickly moved on to television. She also made cameo appearances in other films during the same time period.

She landed the major part in the movie “Love in the Time of Money” just seven years after she began acting. After that, her big break came in the form of a starring part in the low-budget drama Down to the Bone. She has shown herself a reliable financial investment thanks to her film roles. She is a multifaceted artist whose directorial debut, Higher Ground, was widely praised. In addition, she is a producer on the “Bates Motel” series.

On August 6, 1973, Vera Ann Farmiga was born to Ukrainian immigrants in Clifton, New Jersey, USA. Her mother, a schoolteacher, and father, a computer systems expert, raised her. She is the second youngest of six siblings, with an elder brother. She was born to a Catholic household in Ukraine and didn’t learn to speak English until she started kindergarten at age six. Farmiga attended ‘St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic School’ in Newark when her family relocated there from Irvington when she was 12.

She had classical piano and folk dance training as a young kid but was pretty reserved. She was a member of the Ukrainian Girl Scouts organization Plast and the Ukrainian folk-dancing ensemble Syzokryli as a teenager. She completed high school at “Hunterdon Central Regional” in 1991. She developed an interest in performing as a student there. She attended Syracuse University for Ophthalmology but changed her major to the visual and performing arts since she was interested in acting.

In 1997, Farmiga tied the knot with French actor Sebastian Roché. In 2004, the couple decided to divorce. Renn Hawkey, a musician, was her September 13, 2008, bride. Fynn McDonnell Hawkey and Gytta Lubov Hawkey are the names of the couple’s son and daughter, respectively. Vera Farmiga’s theatrical career took off with her performance as Miranda in 1996’s “The Tempest” at the American Conservatory Theatre. She has participated in notable New York City theater productions with “The Barrow Group.” On October 17, 1996, she made her Broadway debut in ‘Taking Sides,’ a play by Ronald Harwood.

After that, she played Emily Elliot in the 1997 TV Western Rose Hill. In the 1997 Fox fantasy adventure series Roar, she played Catlin, a formerly enslaved person. Only one season of the program was aired. She had a supporting part in the 2000 romantic drama film “Autumn in New York,” starring Richard Gere and Winona Ryder. She also appeared in the crime drama The Opportunists that same year. In 2001, she was a supporting character in the critically acclaimed action film 15 Minutes. The British-Macedonian western drama Dust, in which she also featured, had its world debut at the 2001 Venice Film Festival.

She had a recurring role as ‘Alex Cross’ on UC: Undercover, an NBC police procedural drama, in 2001. After the show ended after one season, she played Queen Josephine in the Hallmark Channel’s fantasy film adaptation of “Snow White and the Fairest of Them All.” She had the central part at the Sundance premiere of the romantic drama Love in the Time of Money (2002). She had a supporting role in the 2002 comedy-drama Dummy as ‘Lorena Fanchetti.’ In 2004, at the ‘Sundance Film Festival,’ she made her breakthrough performance in the indie drama film Down to the Bone. She earned the best actress award for the part.

Then came “Iron Jawed Angels,” a drama film on “HBO,” and “Touching Evil,” an American remake of a British crime thriller. Critics praised the show, even if it only lasted for one season. She had a supporting part in the 2004 political thriller The Manchurian Candidate, which was well-received by critics and a financial success at the box office. She portrayed ‘Eleanna’ in 2005’s ‘Neverwas.’ The world premiere took place at the ‘Toronto International Film Festival.’

She had a cameo in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed as a supporting character 2006. Four “Academy Awards” were given to the picture, and audiences flocked to see it. She also appeared in “Running Scared,” a crime thriller directed by Wayne Kramer, that same year. She plays the leading role in the Korean-American love drama Never Forever, directed by Gina Kim and premiering at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. After that, she was in the 2007 psychological thriller “Joshua” and the 2009 drama “Quid Pro Quo.” The latter had its debut at the 2008 ‘Sundance Film Festival.’

She appeared in “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas,” a British historical drama released in September 2008 that received rave reviews. She also had leading roles in two other films released in the same year: the British-Russian war drama In Transit and the political thriller Nothing But the Truth. In Jaume Collet-Serra’s 2009 hit film “Orphan,” she played a woman who, after having a stillbirth, adopts a peculiar nine-year-old girl. After that, she had her TIFF debut in the romance drama A Heavenly Vintage, directed by Niki Caro.

She co-starred with George Clooney in the 2009 smash hit “Up in the Air.” She was nominated for several awards and ultimately made it into the prestigious ‘Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for her work. She has a supporting role in the 2009 comedy film Henry’s Crime. In the science fiction action thriller ‘Source Code,’ released in 2011, she plays Capt. Colleen Goodwin. In addition, she had a role in the experimental film Suite for Pong.

In 2011, she debuted as a filmmaker with the religious drama film Higher Ground. After premiering at the 2011 “Sundance Film Festival,” the picture received widespread critical praise. The production crew included several members of her family, including her younger sister Taissa Farmiga, husband Renn Hawkey, and cousin Adriana Farmiga.

She made her acting debut in the 2012 Sundance Film Festival exclusive comedy-drama Goats. The same year, she played CIA operative Catherine Linklater in the blockbuster action film Safe House, directed by Daniel Espinosa. She has been starring as Norma Louise Bates in the A&E drama-thriller series Bates Motel since March 2013. She has been a producer on the program since its second season and has also been nominated for multiple awards for her work on the show. From 2013 through 2017, the show was shown.

She played famous paranormal investigator “Lorraine Warren” in James Wan’s 2013 thriller “The Conjuring.” It eventually became one of the most successful horror films of all time. The next film she was in was the romantic comedy At Middleton, where she played the role of “Edith Martin.” The film’s world premiere took place at the 2013 ‘Seattle International Film Festival.’ She then acted in David Dobkin’s drama film, The Judge (2014) and the Romanian-American comedy-drama, Closer to the Moon (2013). Both movies only earned a respectable sum at the box office.

She plays Eleanor Finch in the 2016 film Special Correspondents, a comic satire written and directed by Ricky Gervais. The following year, she appeared in James Wan’s The Conjuring 2 again as Lorraine Warren. From 2018-2019, she had many starring parts in films, including ‘The Commuter,’ ‘Boundaries,’ ‘The Front Runner,’ ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters,’ and ‘Annabelle Comes Home.’ She was re-enlisted to play Lorraine Warren in 2018’s “The Conjuring 3.” The criminal drama film The Many Saints of Newark, in which she was cast the following year, became a critical success.
