Vincent Neil Wharton is an American musician best known as the main singer for the heavy metal band ‘Motley Crue,’ which he co-founded in April 1981. Wharton has been with the band since its inception. The band was formed in January 1981 when bassist Nikki Sixx started practicing with drummer Tommy Lee. Neil was the last long-term member to join the band after Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee began to practice together.
They swiftly settled on forming a new band and started looking for potential members, eventually recruiting guitarist Mick Mars. The band had not decided on a lead singer but continued their search. Mars was in Hollywood when he watched Neil play with the band “Rock Candy,” he advised that they approach Neil to join the band after seeing him perform with them. Lee, who had known Vince Neil since high school, approved him, but Neil ultimately decided not to proceed with the transaction.
On the other hand, as time went on and the other members of “Rock Candy” were engaged in other projects, Neil became more and more eager to experiment with new things. As a result, when Lee approached him again, Neil said yes to the offer, and on April 1, 1981, he became the newest member of “Motley Crue,” completing the band’s lineup. As a result of internal tensions within the band, Neil resigned from ‘Motley Crue’ in 1992. Soon after, he launched his career as a solo artist. Even though he was coaxed back into the band in 1997, he also put out four albums under his name.
Neil’s personal life is notorious for being very chaotic, and he has a lengthy history of substance abuse and alcoholism-related issues, which have resulted in several arrests and convictions, including one for “vehicular manslaughter.”On February 8, 1961, Neil was brought into the world in Hollywood, California. His family relocated around Southern California throughout the 1960s, landing in Inglewood, then going on to Watts, and ultimately deciding to make their home in Glendora.
There, Neil received his education at the Sunflower Intermediate School and moved to the adjacent ‘Royal Oak High School’ in Covina. It was there that he became acquainted with Tommy Lee. In addition to having a strong passion for music, when Neil was a teenager, he was into various sports, including basketball, football, baseball, surfing, and wrestling. However, music was his first interest, and around 14 or 15, he started playing and singing with school and friend bands.
When he was just 17 years old, he joined the band “Rock Candy.” When he signed up with ‘Motley Crue,’ he had just turned 18. In the latter part of that year, he wed his first wife. Neil was arrested for the first time (if you don’t include the crimes he committed as a teenager) in December 1984, and he was found guilty of “vehicular manslaughter” for having caused the death of “Hanoi Rocks” drummer Nicholas Dingley, also known as “Razzle,” in a vehicle wreck.
Neil served 15 days in prison, was placed on a five-year probation, performed 200 hours of community service, and made reparation payments totaling $2.6 million to the people hurt in the car accident. Throughout the 1980s, Neil served as the main vocalist for the band “Motley Crue.” ‘Too Fast for Love’ (1981) was the band’s first studio album, released around this time. This was followed by a string of successful album releases, including 1985’s “Theatre of Pain,” which Neil dedicated to his victim, “Razzle,” and 1983’s “Shout at the Devil,” which established “Motley Crue” as a large stage band.
‘Girls, Girls, Girls’ became a massive success in 1987, and ‘Dr. ‘ Feelgood’ became their album with the most sales in 1989. The band’s lengthy streak of critically acclaimed album releases helped establish Neil as the band’s singer, establishing them as one of the most popular hard rock bands of the 1980s. However, in February of 1992, after the release of the band’s 10-year retrospective album titled “Decade of Decadence 81-91” (which was the band’s first compilation album), Neil left “Motley Crue.”After quitting ‘Motley Crue,’ Neil concentrated on his solo career and published his first solo album, ‘Exposed,’ in 1993.
The album debuted at number 13 on the ‘Billboard’ list. Afterward, Neil went on tour to promote the record, opening for the ‘Van Halen time in 1994. In September 1995, Neil issued ‘Carved in Stone,’ his second solo effort, an edgy industrial record. While Neil coped with a difficult situation in his family, the publication was put on hold. Skylar, his daughter, was suffering from a life-threatening illness. The record “Carved in Stone” only sold less than 100,000 copies and peaked at 139 on the Billboard 200 chart. Even though Neil rejoined “Motley Crue” in 1997, he never stopped pursuing individual possibilities, and in 2010, he released his third solo album titled “Tattoos & Tequila.”
In 2003, he had previously released ‘Live at the Whisky: One Night Only,’ a live recording of him performing several different ‘Motley Crue back songs. The autobiographical book Neil published in the same year included the song “Tattoos & Tequila” as the soundtrack. The book’s title was ‘Tattoos & Tequila: To Hell and Back with One of Rock’s Most Notorious Frontmen.’ One of the chapters in the book served as inspiration for each song on the CD. In 1997, Neil made his return to Motley Crue. The band released their seventh album, “Generation Swine,” followed by “New Tattoo” in 2000.
The compilation album “Red, White, and Crue” was released in 2005, while the album “Saints of Los Angeles,” released in 2008, was the last record to include Neil and the other three original band members. After Motley Crue completed their “The Final Tour” in 2014 and 2015, frontman Neil announced in September 2018 that the band had reunited and was working on new material for an upcoming album.
In addition, Neil has tried his hand at a broad range of other business endeavors.
He is the proprietor of his own nightclubs and retail establishments. Vince Neil Ink is the name of the tattoo shop that he owns and operates in Las Vegas. In addition, he is affiliated with several wineries and has even launched his very own brand of tequila called ‘Tres Rios.’ In addition, Neil was an investor in several other clubs, restaurants, and football teams; however, these ventures have yet to be successful. In addition to that, he has had cameo appearances in a few other television shows. He has appeared in several films, including “Police Academy 6: City Under Siege,” released in 1989.
