Wale Bio

Wale (pronounced “wah-lay”), who calls himself the “Ambassador of Rap for the Capital,” was able to transcend his position as a local superstar and become a national rap competitor by utilizing go-go-inspired hip-hop as the platform for his creative wordplay and music. He calls himself the “Ambassador of Rap for the Capital.” However, most of the significant songs that followed him were melodic slow jams, and they were released from the latter part of the 2000s into the late 2010s.

These songs, including “Lotus Flower Bomb” and “Bad,” provided support for albums that consistently scored at or at the top of the Billboard 200 list, including the number one albums on the chart, The Gifted (2013) and The Album About Nothing (2015). In addition to the full-length studio recordings, countless mixtapes, guest appearances on songs by artists like Waka Flocka Flame and Rick Ross, and significant roles on various volumes in Maybach’s Self Made compilation series were also released.

The rapper wrapped off the decade of the 2010s with the release of Wow…That’s Crazy (2019), his fourth solo full-length album overall and entered the Top Ten of the Billboard 200. His catalog was expanded in the 2020s with the release of an extended play titled The Imperfect Storm (2020) and his seventh studio album, Folarin II (2021). Olubowale Victor Akintimehin was born in Washington, District of Columbia, in 1984 to parents who were originally from Nigeria but had moved to the United States five years previously. Wale spent most of his childhood in suburban Washington, DC, even though his family relocated to Maryland when he was ten years old and was on his way to becoming a rapper.

He received football scholarships to attend Robert Morris College and Virginia State University but ultimately decided to go to Bowie State University instead. However, he was already severely infected by the music bug, and he quickly decided to give up his education and pursue a career as a recording artist instead. It was in 2003 or 2004 that he gained his first airing with the song “Rhyme of the Century,” he owes it to the support of a local radio DJ who believed in his abilities. Because of this, the following year’s issue of Source magazine included him in the Unsigned Hype section.

Wale scored a streak of successes in the Washington, District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia region in 2006 after signing a recording contract with the local start-up label Studio 43. The rawer, percussion-driven offshoot of disco originated in Washington, DC, and is known as go-go. Many of those albums sampled go-go from the 1980s, such as the hit song “Dig Dug,” which was an homage to Ronald “Dig Dug” Dixon of the go-go band the Northeast.

Groovers. In 2007, uber-producer and DJ Mark Ronson, best known for his collaborations with Amy Winehouse, Christina Aguilera, and Rhymefest, became aware of the go-go MC because of his savvy use of the Internet and MySpace. This was a significant contributor to the go-go MC’s rise. During the summer of 2010, Wale disseminated his mixtape titled 100 Miles and Running after signing a production agreement with Mark Ronson’s record label, Allido. Even though he was not signed to a big brand, he was greeted with favorable publicity from various publications, including XXL magazine and The New York Times.

Early in 2008, Interscope prevailed over Epic, Atlantic, and Def Jam in a competitive bidding process to sign Wale to its roster. Epic, Atlantic, and Def Jam all made proposals. The following year saw the release of many of the rapper’s first major-label hits, including the upbeat “Chillin,” which had a melody performed by Lady Gaga, and the go-go-inflected “Pretty Girls,” aided by Gucci Mane.

These singles were released before and included on the full-length album Attention Deficit, released in November 2009 and debuted at number 21 on the Billboard 200. The momentum continued thanks to a featured appearance on Waka Flocka Flame’s multi-platinum single “No Hands.” More crucially, the collection Self Made, Vol. 1, which featured Wale prominently, was the first fruit of a new partnership with Rick Ross’ Warner-supported Maybach Music Group. The rapper’s first hit to be certified gold as a lead artist was “That Way” off the album.

The album Ambition, the rapper’s second full-length release and his first genuine release for MMG was released in November 2011 and debuted at position number two on the Billboard 200. Its popularity was mainly due to the laid-back, slow jam “Lotus Flower Bomb.” The duet between Miguel and Future was one of the most successful songs on the radio this year. It topped Billboard’s R&B/hip-hop chart, broke into the top 40 of the Hot 100, and was eventually considered for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Rap Song.

Between albums, Wale was significantly involved in the compilation Self Made, Vol. 2, highlighted by the song “Bag of Money.” Wale also had supporting roles on tracks by members of the Maybach family and other artists, such as Ross’s “Diced Pineapples” and Cash Out’s “Hold Up.” Wale overcame the gap in album releases in June 2013, when he released The Gifted, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart thanks in part to the multi-platinum ballad “Bad” starring Tiara Thomas (or Rihanna on the remix). The song is known for its squeaky bed springs. After just a few short months, MMG released the third installment of their Self-Made series. This time, Wale had a much less role in the project.
