Actress, comedian, and writer Wanda Sykes hails from the United States. The first time anybody noticed her was for her contributions as a writer on The Chris Rock Show, for which she was awarded a Primetime Emmy in 1999. Sykes was rated one of the 25 funniest individuals in the United States by Entertainment Weekly 2004. In addition, she is well-known for her performance as Barb Baran on the CBS sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine (which aired from 2006 to 2010), as well as for her performances on the HBO show Curb Your Enthusiasm (which lasted from 2001 to 2011).
Wanda Sykes capitalized on her popularity as a stand-up comedian in the late 1980s and early 1990s to launch a career as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry on television and in the movies. Sykes was more renowned for her work on other programs, such as Inside the NFL and The New Adventures of Old Christine. Even though she had two television series of her own—Wanda at Large and Wanda Does It—she was not as well known for those projects. By the early 2000s, Sykes was also developing a successful film career, acting as a live performer and voice artist for successful animated films such as Over the Hedge and Barnyard.
In 1964, Sykes was born in Portsmouth, Virginia. While her father was a colonel in the United States Army, her mother worked as a bank manager. Her father was in the military. She spent her childhood in Portsmouth, near Fort Meade in Maryland. Sykes was a free-speech advocate from the time she was tiny. Because her parents were afraid that she could misbehave if they had guests around, they would send her to her grandmother’s house whenever they had company. At times, they even bribed her to keep silent for them. Sykes received her high school education at Arundel High School, where she maintained her reputation as an outspoken and comedic type while also participating in theatrical programs.
Sykes had every intention of entering the University of Maryland once she graduated from high school; however, she changed her mind and spent the next two years earning her associate’s degree at a local community college. After that, she continued her education at Hampton University, earning a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1986. After receiving her degree, she started working at the National Security Agency (NSA) at a desk position, where she was responsible for acquiring equipment like espionage devices for the government agency. Before Sykes decided to join a talent competition on a whim, she was not especially happy but did not know what path she should take with her life.
Sykes performed a five-minute stand-up performance that she had written while she was at her desk at work and performed at the Coors Light Super Talent Showcase in Washington, District of Columbia. Sykes did not emerge victorious, but the experience encouraged her to develop her stand-up comedy routines. The way Sykes thought back then was relatively straightforward. In an interview with Scotty Ballard from Jet, she said, “I began performing stand-up comedy in 1987.” The worst that could happen was that I was incorrect in my assessment. If I attempted it and it didn’t work out, I can say, “It was something I wanted to try, but it didn’t work out; however, at least I tried.”
She worked in comedy clubs throughout Washington, District of Columbia, and Baltimore, Maryland, while maintaining her full-time position at the National Security Agency (NSA) for five years. Sykes better understood what it meant to be a comedian, including what occurs when a joke falls flat and how to respond to the situation. As soon as Sykes realized she could make a living as a comic and go on tour, she left her job working for the government to concentrate entirely on her stand-up comedy career. In 1992, she uprooted her life and went to New Jersey. Shortly afterward, she started giving frequent performances in New York City. Throughout her career, Sykes has cultivated an on-stage character of a know-it-all, no-nonsense lady who will not put up with any silly scenario or accept any kind of ribbing from anybody. She developed strong relationships with several other comedians, including Chris Rock.
By 1995, Sykes was serving as the opening act for Rock, who was already a great performer at that point. A new era in Sykes’ career began a few years later as a direct result of their work together and their connection with Rock. She was brought on as a member of The Chris Rock Show’s writing crew in addition to her role as a performer. The show was broadcast from 1997 to 2000 when Sykes and the other writers were nominated for and won an Emmy Award in 1999. While Sykes worked as an actress on The Chris Rock Show, she simultaneously launched her career in the film industry. She made her debut in the film Tomorrow Night in the year 1998.
As The Chris Rock Show’s run ended, Sykes’ career also advanced in a different direction. She has been a lover of football her whole life, and in the year 2000, she was recruited by HBO’s Inside the NFL, presented by Bob Costas, to work as a field reporter. She continued to provide knowledgeable comedic relief for the show for several years while offering herginal pieces to the program. Sykes was able to secure the job when she crashed a wrap party for Inside the NFL and wowed the host, Bob Costas, as well as the producers of the show with her sharp wit and cutting remarks.
