Washington Football Team Bio

The Washington Football Team was formerly known as the Boston Braves when it was created in 1932. Its name was changed to the Washington Nationals in 1933, and the team moved to the nation’s capital in 1937, when it won the first of five World Championships in a row. The Washington Football Team has won three Super Bowls, capping out their seasons of 1982, 1987, and 1991 with Super Bowl triumphs, in addition to winning the NFL Championship Game in 1937 and 1942.

As a member of the National Football Conference (NFC) and three-time Super Bowl winners, the Washington Redskins represent the National Football League (NFL) (1983, 1988, and 1992). Originally known as the Boston Braves, the club switched to the Boston Redskins for three seasons before migrating to Washington in 1937.

In the same year, the Redskins landed one of their most famous players when they selected quarterback Sammy Baugh with the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft. During his 16-year NFL career, Baugh led the Redskins to a championship as a rookie and established multiple throwing records. The Redskins won their second NFL Championship in 1942, defeating the Chicago Bears two years after being humiliated 73–0 in the final game.

The Redskins, one of the NFL’s richest teams, led by Hall of Fame owner George Preston Marshall, pioneered the use of sports broadcast media. Their first radio network was set up for games in the South in 1944, and by 1950 the whole Redskins season had been carried on television. Aside from having some of the most ardent supporters in the NFL, the Washington Redskins have had a sellout every season since 1967, making them one of the most successful teams in the league in terms of ticket sales.

When the Redskins became a media darling, it happened at the same time as the team’s most unsuccessful era, when they had only four winning seasons between 1946 and 1970 and failed to make the playoffs in each of those years. The Redskins’ quarterback Sonny Jurgensen and wide receiver Bobby Mitchell, both of whom played in the 1960s and were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983, were two of the game’s most renowned figures.

After the franchise hired George Allen as head coach in 1971, the Redskins went on to make the playoffs in his first year in charge. The Redskins’ best season under Allen was in 1972 when they won the NFC championship behind wide receiver Charley Taylor and linebacker Chris Hanburger on offense and defense, respectively. However, the following January, the Redskins were defeated in the Super Bowl by the then-unbeaten Miami Dolphins.

The fact that each of the Redskins Super Bowl-winning teams was headed by a different quarterback is a credit to Gibbs’ coaching abilities and the overall quality of his teams. In addition to future Hall of Famers like running back John Riggins, wide receiver Art Monk, and cornerback Darrell Green, the Redskins’ Super Bowl-winning team was also famed for their tough offensive lines, dubbed “the Hogs.” After Gibbs’ retirement, the squad went winless for the next three years.

While Jack Kent Cooke had owned the Redskins since 1985, billionaire Daniel Snyder bought them completely in 1999, and his first decade of ownership was defined by splashy free-agent signings and Joe Gibbs’ four-year return to the sidelines starting in 2004, but he had few successful seasons. The squad finished the regular season with a 10–6 record, but it lost its first playoff game despite the outstanding performance of rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Griffin suffered an injury in that playoff defeat, and he was sidelined for the remainder of the team’s dreadful 2013 campaign, which saw them lose 13 games and finish with the poorest record in the National Football Conference (NFC). Kirk Cousins took over for the ineffectual Griffin in 2014, and the Redskins won the division the following year under his leadership. The team’s involvement in the playoffs turned out to be an anomaly, as they finished third in their division three times in a row before going 3–13 in 2019.

While some said that the phrase was a racist slur meant to offend Native Americans, others insisted that it was meant to symbolize the team’s pride in its ancestry. The argument over the team’s moniker heated up in 2014 when demonstrators claimed it was a racial slur. In June of that year, the U.S. Patent Office revoked the team’s trademark on the name for being derogatory to Native Americans.

Snyder promised not to alter the name despite the team’s protests. A similar case hearing in October 2016 resulted in a June 2017 court judgment that threw down the U.S. government’s restriction on offensive trademark registrations on First Amendment grounds, but the Supreme Court refused to hear the team’s appeal.
