Will Smith Bio

Willard Carroll “Will” Smith, Jr. (born September 25, 1968) is an American actor, comedian, producer, rapper, and singer who is best known for his role as Will Smith in the film Will Smith. Success in television, cinema, and music have all been a part of his career. In April 2007, Newsweek dubbed him “Hollywood’s most powerful actor” and “the most powerful actor in the world.” The actress has been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards, two Academy Awards, and four Grammy Awards, and she has won four of them.

Smith rose to small success as a rapper in the late 1980s, going by the stage moniker “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, a renowned television series in which he featured in 1990, helped to significantly improve his public recognition and fame. The show first aired on NBC for six seasons (1990-1996), and it has since been syndicated on a variety of networks on a constant basis. Following the conclusion of the series, Smith transitioned from television to film, eventually appearing in a slew of major motion pictures. With eight consecutive films grossing over $100 million at the domestic box office and eleven consecutive films grossing over $150 million internationally, he is the only actor to have eight consecutive films open at the top of the domestic box office chart. He also has eight consecutive films in which he stars open at the top of the international box office chart.

Forbes magazine has named Smith the most bankable celebrity in the world. At the time of this writing, 17 of the 21 films in which he has played the lead part have earned more than $100 million in worldwide box office receipts, with five of those films earning more than $500 million in worldwide box office receipts. As of 2014, his films had brought in a total of $6.6 billion at the international box office. Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness have both earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Actor.

Smith attended the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He was raised as a Baptist in the Wynnefield district of West Philadelphia, where he grew up. The youngest of his three siblings are twins Harry and Ellen, who are three years younger than he is. He has a sister, Pamela, who is four years older than him. Smith attended Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School in Philadelphia, which is a private Catholic elementary school. His parents divorced when he was 13 years old, but they did not divorce until around the year 2000.

Smith went to Overbrook High School in New Jersey. Even though it has been widely circulated, it is incorrect that Smith turned down a scholarship to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); he never applied to college because “he wanted to rap,” as he stated. “Pre-engineering [summer] programme” at MIT for high school students, according to Smith, but he did not participate in the programme.  I had really strong SAT scores, and they were in desperate need of black students, so I had a good chance of getting in. I, on the other hand, had no intention of attending college.”

With his boyhood buddy Jeffrey “DJ Jazzy Jeff” Townes as producer and Ready Rock C (Clarence Holmes) as the human beat box, Smith began his career as the MC of the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. The group was well-known for performing lighthearted, radio-friendly songs, such as “Parents Just Don’t Understand” and “Summertime,” which were among their most popular hits. They received widespread critical praise and were given the first Grammy in the Rap category (1988).

Smith blew through his money in the years 1988 and 1989, and he underpaid his income taxes as a result. Smith’s tax liability was finally estimated at $2.8 million by the Internal Revenue Service, who seized several of his property and garnished his wages to collect the amount.

The show was a hit, and it marked the beginning of his acting career. Following his research on the common qualities of box office triumphs, Smith set himself the goal of becoming “the largest movie star on the planet.”

It was in the drama Six Degrees of Separation (1993) and the action picture Bad Boys (1995) that Smith made his debut as a leading man; both films he co-starred in with Martin Lawrence.

Smith appeared in the 1996 film Independence Day as a member of an ensemble cast directed by Roland Emmerich. In addition to becoming the second biggest grossing film in history at the time, the film established Smith as one of the most popular movie stars in the world at the time of its release. Later, in the summer of 1997, he starred with Tommy Lee Jones in the summer blockbuster Men in Black, in which he played Agent J. He went on to win another Oscar for his performance. Enemy of the State, in which Smith co-starred with Gene Hackman, was released in 1998.

He turned down the role of Neo in The Matrix in favour of the role of Wild Wild West in Wild Wild West (1999).  However, in interviews conducted after the film’s release, Smith stated that he had “some regrets.” “On Wild Wild West, I made a clerical error. The way it was said may have been improved.”

During a 24-hour period in 2005, Smith was officially recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records for attending three premieres in one day.

He has shown an interest in appearing in a feature film adaptation of the television series It Takes a Thief.

On December 10, 2007, Smith was recognised at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, which is located in the heart of the entertainment district. The imprints of Smith’s hands and feet were left outside the world-renowned theatre in front of a large number of fans. Smith appeared in the film I Am Legend, which was released on December 14, 2007, later that month. Despite receiving only moderately positive reviews, the picture received the largest opening weekend ever for a film released in the United States during the month of December. Smith has stated that the picture is “aggressively unusual,” which he believes is appropriate. According to one reviewer, the film’s box office triumph “solidified [Smith’s] position as the number one box office attraction in Hollywood.” The TV Guide magazine reported on December 1, 2008, that Smith had been selected as one of America’s top ten most fascinating individuals of 2008 for a Barbara Walters ABC special that aired on December 4, 2008.

In 2008, it was rumoured that Smith was working on a film called The Last Pharaoh, in which he would play Taharqa, a role that he would play himself. Smith made his film debut in the superhero film Hancock, which was released in 2008.

Men in Black III premiered on May 25, 2012, with Smith returning his role as Agent J.  This was his first significant starring part in four years, and it was well-deserved.

On August 19, 2011, it was revealed that Smith had returned to the studio with producer La Mar Edwards to begin production on his fifth studio album, which would be released in 2012. T.I., Chris Brown, and Game are among the musicians with whom Edwards has collaborated. In 2005, Smith’s latest studio album, Lost and Found, was released on the independent label RCA.

Smith and his son Jaden appeared as father and son in two productions: the 2006 biographical drama The Pursuit of Happiness and the science fiction feature After Earth, which was released on May 31, 2013. Smith and his son Jaden also appeared in the 2006 biographical drama The Pursuit of Happiness.

Focus, in which Smith co-starred with Margot Robbie, was a romantic drama. Nicky Spurgeon is a seasoned con artist who takes a young, gorgeous woman under his wing. He was played by him. On February 27, 2015, the film Focus was released. According to reports, Smith was supposed to feature in the science fiction thriller Brilliance, which was to be based on Marcus Sakey’s novel of the same name and to be written by Jurassic Park writer David Koepp and directed by Steven Spielberg. However, he decided to leave the project.

In the sports drama Concussion, Smith portrayed Dr. Bennet Omalu of the Brain Injury Research Institute, who was responsible for the discovery of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in a football player’s brain.  CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) is a degenerative disease induced by severe head trauma that can only be detected after death. This is primarily owing to Smith’s last-minute departure from the sci-fi thriller-drama Brilliance, which he was starring in. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the film Concussion was directed by Peter Landesman and was primarily filmed in Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania provided $14.4 million in film tax incentives to the production. The first day of principal photography was October 27, 2014. Gugu Mbatha-Raw portrayed his wife in the film. Omalu worked as a consultant on the project.

Smith is going to act in the independent drama Collateral Beauty, which will be directed by David Frankel and will premiere in theatres on November 15, 2015. Smith will portray a New York advertising executive who suffers from a severe depression as a result of a traumatic personal experience.

On December 11, 2009, in Oslo, Norway, the Nobel Peace Prize Concert was held: Smith and his wife Jada, as well as their daughters Jaden and Willow Smith, tied the knot with Sheree Zampino in 1992. They had one son, Trey Smith, who was born on November 11, 1992, and divorced in 1995 after a long relationship. Trey made an appearance in his father’s music video for the song “Just the Two of Us” from 1998.

In 1997, Smith tied the knot with actress Jada Koren Pinkett. His wife, actress Willow Camille Reign Smith, has two children with Smith: Jaden Christopher Syre Smith (born 1998), who was his co-star in The Pursuit of Happyness and After Earth, and Willow Camille Reign Smith (born 2000), who played his daughter in I Am Legend. In addition to Treyball Development Inc., Smith and his brother Harry also operate Treyball Development Inc., a Beverly Hills-based corporation named after Trey. Smith and his family currently reside in the Los Angeles, California area.

Smith was routinely included in Fortune Magazine’s “Richest 40” list of the forty wealthiest Americans under the age of 40, which was published every year since 1999.

Known professionally as Will Smith, by the given name Willard Carroll Smith, Jr. (born September 25, 1968, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States), American actor and musician whose charisma, clean-cut good looks, and quick wit helped him make the transition from rap music to a successful acting career

The nickname “Prince Charming” was given to Smith when he was in high school, which he later changed to “Fresh Prince” in order to represent a more hip-hop feel when he started his musical career. He forged a friendship with former schoolmate and DJ Jeffrey Townes, whom he met when they were both in high school in 1981. They began recording in 1986 under the name DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, and their first single, “Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble,” was released the following year, followed by the album Rock the House the next year. The group’s pioneering track “Parents Just Don’t Understand” was released in 1988, and it went on to win a Grammy Award (the first Grammy ever presented in the rap performance category).

Smith’s performance, which was remarkable for its broad crossover appeal, was frequently referred to as “soft rap” due to the absence of hard-core lyrics and topics in his compositions. He was discovered by television producers when his platinum-certified records and accompanying videos were made available to the public. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, a television sitcom that premiered in 1990 and was partially based on Smith’s real-life persona, was created in 1990. It aired on NBC for six successful seasons before being cancelled at the star’s request. During its run, Smith received two Golden Globe nominations and served as executive producer for the final season, which was directed by Smith.

With the success of his television series, Smith ventured into the world of film with Where the Day Takes You (1992). His first big part was in the film adaptation of John Guare’s popular stage drama Six Degrees of Separation, which he also directed (1993). But the action comedy-thriller Bad Boys (1995), which marked a watershed moment in his film career, proved to be the turning point. Despite the fact that the film was a critical failure, it grossed more than $100 million worldwide, demonstrating Smith’s star power.

Independence Day, the year’s highest-grossing film, featured him as the lead actor. When he returned to the big screen the following year with the science fiction comedy Men in Black, for which he also sang the Grammy-winning title song, he was a smash hit at the box office. Sequels to the film were released in 2002 and 2012. Another highlight of the year 1997 was the publication of Smith’s first solo album Big Willie Style, which featured the hit single “Gettin’ Jiggy with It,” and he followed it up two years later with Willennium.

Smith’s impressive range as an actor continued after his performance in the dramatic thriller Enemy of the State (1998). He went on to play an enigmatic golf caddy in The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000), the boxer Muhammad Ali in the biopic Ali (2001), for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, an officer from the near future in I, Robot (2004), and a “date doctor” who helps a romantically inept man find love in Hitch (2005). (2005). Next, he appeared in The Pursuit of Happyness, in which his portrayal of a single father who overcomes difficulties got him a second nomination for best actor at the Academy Awards the following year.

Smith appears in the film I Am Legend (2007) as a scientist who may be the last human on the planet after an epidemic ravaged the planet. Harrison Smith starred as a superhero attempting to improve his image in the film Hancock (2008), and he also appeared in Seven Pounds (2008), in which he played a someone seeking penance after accidently killing seven people in a vehicle accident.

Smith went on to star in the science-fiction epic After Earth (2013), which was loosely based on an idea he had developed. He co-starred with his son Jaden in the film. Earlier this year, Smith appeared in the thriller Focus, where he played a con artist, and Concussion, in which he played the doctor who identified the prevalence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) among NFL players. The assassin Deadshot in the action thriller Suicide Squad, as well as a heartbroken father in the drama Collateral Beauty, were both roles he played in 2016.

His next role was as an officer in the Netflix action-thriller Bright, which is set in a futuristic Los Angeles where humans coexist with legendary beings. Smith was subsequently cast as the genie in the Disney family comedy Aladdin a few years later (2019). In Gemini Man (2019), he played two roles: a retired assassin and his younger clone, the latter of whom was a digitally produced version of Smith while he was in his 20s.

Spies in Disguise, in which Smith provided the voice of a spy who is disguised as a pigeon, was among Smith’s other credits from the year 2019. The next year, he starred in Bad Boys for Life (2020), a sequel to his breakout picture from 1995. Smith will play the titular role in King Richard, a biopic about the father of tennis champions Serena and Venus Williams, which will be released in 2021.

Following the release of Born to Reign (2002), Smith continued his recording career with Lost and Found (2005), but his subsequent releases failed to equal the success of his prior recordings. Smith has worked as a producer for numerous films in the early twenty-first century, some of which he appeared in, and with his wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith (whom he married in 1997), he co-created and produced the sitcom All of Us (2003–07). In 2018, he served as the host of the Earth-themed documentary television series One Strange Rock. Will, Smith’s book (co-written with Mark Manson), will be published in the year 2021.

Forbes magazine has called Smith the most bankable celebrity in the world, and he has earned this distinction. According to box office earnings from films in which he has played the lead role, 17 of the 21 films in which he has appeared have earned more than $100 million at the worldwide box office, with five of those films earning more than $500 million at the worldwide box office. At the time of writing, his films had grossed a total of $6.6 billion at the global box office. His performances in Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness have won him Academy Award nominations for Best Actor in both films.
