Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, better known by his stage name, Wizkid, was born in Lagos, Nigeria on July 16, 1990. His household is in Surulere, which is in Lagos State, Nigeria. His father is a practicing member of the Sunni branch of Islam, while his mother is a devout follower of the Pentecostal branch of Christianity. His grandfather has been married three times. His parents enrolled him at ‘Lead City Institution,’ a private institution in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. This was after he had previously attended Los Angeles State University. However, after just two semesters at this institution, he withdrew from school to concentrate on his music career.
He said his career as a musician started when he joined the choir at his local church. His early influences were musicians and performers such as Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, 2 Face Idibia, and Sound Sultan, all of whom encouraged him to pursue a music career. When he was 15 years old, he says that the Nigerian rapper Naeto C was his mentor and helped him develop his skills.
Between 2001 and 2006, he was active as a solo performer under the stage name ‘Lil Prinz.’ Together with his buddies from the church choir, he established a band that they dubbed “Glorious Five.” Before disbanding, they could put out one album recorded in a studio. During the difficult times of his career, he got acquainted with the record producer OJB Jezreel, who later became his guide. He began frequent trips to Jezreel’s recording studio, where he listened to recordings of musicians like 2 Face Idibia and Sound Sultan and gained knowledge from those sessions.
Jezreel advised him to put the recording equipment away for a year and gain his knowledge by observing more seasoned musicians.
In 2009, after he had decided not to continue his education at the university, he signed a record contract with Empire Mates Entertainment (EME). The same year he began performing under the stage name ‘Wizkid,’ he also began recording his first studio album, ‘Superstar.’ Holla at Your Boy was the title of the first single that he issued from the album, and he released it on January 2, 2010.
The song ‘Tease Me/Bad Guy’ on the album was released as his second single on April 2, 2010, while the third single, ‘Don’t Dull,’ was released on December 6, 2010. Under the EME label, the complete album was made available on June 12, 2011. The CD included songs sung in English and Yoruba as their respective composition languages.
The endorsement agreement he inked with Pepsi in 2012 was rumored to be worth $350,000 in United States currency. During the same year, he started production on his second studio album, ‘Ayo.’ ‘Chosen’ was going to be the album’s name when it was first released, but it was ultimately decided to go with ‘Ayo.’ The first single from the album was named “Jaiye Jaiye,” and it was released on May 2, 2013. The song included the music of Femi Kuti, a singer from Nigeria.
On September 6, 2014, the album was made available for purchase. Artists like Femi Kuti, Banky W, Seyi Shay, Phyno, Tyga, Akon, and Wale make cameo appearances on the album.
