2Baba is the stage name of Innocent Ujah Idibia Liste MON, born in Nigeria on September 18, 1975. He is a singer, songwriter, record producer, businessman, and philanthropist in addition to his musical career. He is generally recognized as one of Africa’s best artists of all time. He is known for the range of his vocals, the depth of his lyrical content, and his longevity.
His solo debut album Face2Face (including the international blockbuster hit “African Queen”) ushered in a new wave of awareness and reverence for Nigerian music across Africans on the continent and in the diaspora. He is the most significant figure in the growth in popularity of Nigerian pop music in the 2000s. Before July 2014, he was known professionally under the moniker 2face Idibia.
2Baba is one of the artists in Nigerian music history who has received the most awards. He was the first to win the MTV EMA award for Best African Act in 2005. In 2019, 2Baba and many other well-known musicians, including Cohbams Asuquo and Timi Dakolo, collaborated on a song to raise awareness of children’s rights, “Rights of the Child.”
He relocated to Lagos and began his music career playing with another musician from Benue, Blackface Naija. During his time in high school, he became acquainted with Blackface. Plantashun Boiz is the name of the band that he went on to join alongside Blackface (Ahmedu Augustine Obiabo) and the musician Faze (Chibuzor Orji). Before splitting up in 2004, Plantashun Boiz had commercial success with their albums Body and Soul (2000) and Sold Out (2003), released on Nelson Brown’s record company, Dove Records.
Relationships remained strained during the years following the band’s dissolution and the members’ transition into separate endeavors. Long after the breakup that became known as the “Faze vs. Tuface beef,” the band reunited in 2007 to create a third and final album called Plan B (2007). This album was released after the conflict between Faze and Tuface. Blackface has, on many occasions, accused 2Baba of playing songs they had co-written together but not giving him any of the proceeds from those performances.
The issue was resolved peacefully after a drawn-out fight in the courts and the media. Following the dissolution of Plantashun Boyz in 2004, each band member pursued their musical career. 2Baba debuted as a solo artist in 2004 with the release of the album Face 2 Face. Several publications have hailed This album as the best Nigerian debut album by a solo artist in the 21st century.
The album spawned successes such as “Nfana Ibaga,” “Ole,” and “African Queen,” the latter of which is considered to be one of the most successful songs to originate in Africa and was used as the soundtrack for the film Phat Girlz, which was released in the United States in 2006. In 2009, 2Baba released an experimental album titled The Unstoppable. The album included the hit “Enter the Place.”
Due to issues that arose in 2007 with the album’s distribution, the album’s original release date of 2008 was pushed back to sometime in early 2009. In 2010, 2Baba released a “International Edition” of the same album titled The Unstoppable International Edition. This made him the first Nigerian artist to have an adequately priced worldwide album. In addition, the album was published under the name The Unstoppable International Edition.
2face has released two more singles from the album The Unstoppable, which is available in worldwide versions. At the 2010 SoundCity Music Video honors, the album’s foreign version comprised two benefits in the Best Foreign Album category. In addition, 2Baba was awarded the “Best African Western” prize at the Channel O Music Video Awards as well as the “Best Male” and “Artist of the Year” prizes at the MTV Africa Music Awards.
After releasing his second solo album, he parted ways with the record company Kennis Music and established his record label, which is now known as Hypertek Digital. He and seven other artists from all around Africa are participating in the Sony All African One8 Project together, and they are currently recording a song with R. Kelly and Prince Lee titled “Hands Across the World.”
In August 2016, 2Baba was appointed the first African ambassador for the Italian alcoholic liqueur brand Campari. In 2005, he was appointed ambassador for Guinness beer worldwide. Additionally, he represents the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control as the organization’s brand ambassador. A contract for 2Baba’s sponsorship was struck with Airtel Nigeria in 2010.
In May 2019, after the conclusion of his previous endorsement arrangement with Airtel, he entered into a new agreement with Globacom Telecommunication. In July 2019, 2Babaservedg was the real estate company Pazino Homes and Gardens brand ambassador. In 2014, Tuface and Wizkid were selected to serve as the faces of the Hennessy Artistry Season campaign. In 2019, 2Baba was chosen to represent Oraimo as the company’s first-ever official brand ambassador.
Annie Idibia (née Macauley), an actress, movie producer, model, and serial entrepreneur from Nigeria, is 2Baba’s wife. She has won several awards for her work in the entertainment industry. 2Baba and Annie Macaulay tied the knot in a private ceremony on May 2, 2012, in Lagos, Nigeria. On the same day (March 23, 2013), a civil ceremony was also conducted in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where a notable number of celebrities were in attendance.
Olivia Idibia and Isabel Idibia are the names of the two daughters the famous coupleas produced 2Baba is the father of three children, two of whom he had with Sumbo Ajala and one with Pero Adeniyi while he was still in a relationship with his then-girlfriend, whom later became his wife, Annie Macaulay–Idibia. 2face is the father of seven children in total.
