Potts and her first husband, Steven Hartley, were involved in an automobile accident that resulted in Potts breaking multiple bones below her waist, including compound fractures to both legs and the loss of the heel of her right foot, while Hartley lost his left leg in the accident. In 1978, Potts had her first appearance on the big screen in the comedy film Corvette Summer, which was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and starred Mark Hamill.
