She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in drama from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, where she studied for four years. Potts and her first husband, Steven Hartley, were involved in an automobile accident that resulted in Potts breaking multiple bones below her waist, including compound fractures to both legs and the loss of the heel of her right foot, while Hartley lost his left leg in the accident. In 1978, Potts had her first appearance on the big screen in the comedy film Corvette Summer, which was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and starred Mark Hamill.

Because of her performance in the movie, she was considered for a Golden Globe Award nomination in the year 1979. She was honored with the Genie Award for Best Performance by a Foreign Actress in 1982 for her work in the film Heartaches, which told the story of a young woman who was married to a stock car driver and was pregnant with the child of his buddy. On the short-lived comedy series “Goodtime Girls,” which she starred in during the year 1980, she played the role of Edith Bedelmeyer, a woman who lived in an upstairs flat with three other ladies (who were portrayed by Georgia Engel, Lorna Patterson, and Francine Tacker, respectively).

Being from Tennessee, Potts invented the character of receptionist Janine Melnitz in the Ghostbusters film series. Potts modeled the character’s signature New York accent on that of a friend of hers who was from the city. After that, she became well-known for her part as the cynical interior designer Mary Jo Shively on the CBS television sitcom Designing Women (1986–1993). Since then, she has portrayed a broad variety of notable characters in a variety of films and television shows. For her performance in Love & War as Dana Palladino in 1994, she was considered for a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (1993–1995).

Other notable roles include those played by Mary Elizabeth (O’Brien) Sims on the Lifetime Television drama series Any Day Now (1998–2002), for which she was nominated for two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series; the voice of Bo Peep in three of the Toy Story films; a supporting role in John Hughes’s Pretty in Pink; and guest-starring roles on such CBS television series as Magnum, P.I., Joan of Ar Between the years 2005 and 2009, she appeared as Sophie Devere in NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in reoccurring episodes.

Potts has worked on audio novels, notably the role of the narrator and heroine in Larry McMurtry’s Telegraph Days, for which she was awarded the 2007 Audie Award for Solo Narration-Female. Potts’s performance earned her the award. She had a starring role in the movie adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s Texasville, which was a continuation of The Last Picture Show. She replaced Hope Davis in the part on November 17, 2009, when she made her debut on Broadway by joining the cast of the play God of Carnage, which had previously won the Tony Award for Best Play.

In the comedy-drama series GCB that aired on ABC in 2012, Potts as Elizabeth “Gigi” Stopper, co-starring alongside Leslie Bibb, Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Aspen, Miriam Shor, and Marisol Nichols. She claims that she modeled her performance on that of Dixie Carter, and she goes on to state, “Had she been living, the role ought to have been hers and would have been if she were still around. In addition, Potts starred as the lead character in the original musical film produced by the Hallmark Channel in 2012 and titled The Music Teacher.

The film tells the story of a high school music teacher who is on the verge of losing her cherished school music program as a result of budget cuts imposed by the district. Former students of Daley’s have banded together to produce a musical in order to generate money and save the program. Their goal is to keep the program operating for as long as possible.

In March 2013, Potts agreed to play the lead role in the comedy-drama pilot for ABC called Murder in Manhattan. The show is about a mother and daughter who work together as amateur sleuths. After making the decision to not run the series on network television, ABC searched for a cable network that would be willing to distribute it.  It was revealed at the end of 2013 that Potts would be participating in the critically lauded production of Pippin directed by Diane Paulus commencing on January 21, 2014. She took up the part of Pippin’s grandma Berthe from Tovah Feldshuh, who had been nominated for a Tony Award.

This was the first time she had been in a musical on Broadway. Young Sheldon, a sitcom on CBS, has cast her as a series regular, playing the role of Connie “Meemaw” Tucker, beginning in 2017. Annie Potts attended Stephens College in Missouri, where she majored in theatre studies. After completing her undergraduate degree there, she continued her education in California, where she earned a master’s degree in the field. She tied the knot with her college sweetheart, Steven Hartley when she was 20 years old. In a relatively short period of time after that, she and her husband were involved in a terrible car accident near Sumner, Washington.

Their Volkswagen bus was completely destroyed by two drivers who were drag racing. Both Steve and Annie suffered several fractures, and Steve lost a limb (resulting in traumatic arthritis that still persists). Early roles were primarily in television, such as Black Market Baby (1977), but her presence moved up with an appearance in the mega-hit Ghostbusters (1984), and then she hit the big time with a seven-year stint as one of the stars of Designing Women. Black Market Baby (1977) was one of her first roles (1986). Despite the passage of time, she harbors resentment at the fact that the television show Love & War (1992) was abruptly canceled at one point.
