Brian Johnson Bio

Brian Francis Johnson is an English singer and composer best known for his lengthy and fruitful collaboration with the Australian hard rock/blues rock band AC/DC as the band’s primary vocalist. This partnership spanned over three decades. As a child, he was exposed to music and participated in various performances with the Scouts. As an adult, he continued to sing in the choir at the local church.

In his teenage years, he acquired an interest in rock and roll, and he played in a few bands before helping to build the British glam rock band known as Geordie. The band responsible for many hit songs disbanded in 1978, only to reunite a decade later. Meanwhile, AC/DC was forced to search for a suitable successor for lead singer Bon Scott, which ultimately led to the band’s dissolution.

The other members of AC/DC eventually settled on Johnson as their lead singer because his powerful but solemn voice was an excellent match for the band’s high-octane, hard-hitting rock style. Johnson had received excellent remarks about his singing abilities from Scott, who had seen Johnson perform for Geordie at one point. When Johnson was a band member, it had one of its most fruitful eras, shown by the fact that it produced successful albums such as “Back in Black.”

With the release of songs like ‘For Those About to Rock’ and ‘The Razor’s Edge,’ the band’s fame soared to unprecedented heights worldwide. His parents, Alan and Esther (née De Luca), had four children total, and he was the eldest of the four. He was born on October 5, 1947, in Dunston, Gateshead, County Durham, England. In addition to serving in the Durham Light Infantry of the British Army as a sergeant major, his father worked in the coal mining industry.

In 1996, when Johnson was on the Ballbreaker World Tour with AC/DC, he unexpectedly lost his father. Frascati, in Italy, was the birthplace of his mother. He was a Scouts member in his early years and participated in various performances. In addition to that, he sang in the choir of a local church, and he also appeared in a play that was shown on television. In the early stages of Johnson’s career, he was a member of the bands associated with the Gobi Desert Canoe Club and the Fresh Band.

In 1970, he was a member of “The Jasper Hart Band,” a lounge/club band. In 1972, he and other members of “The Jasper Hart Band” went on to establish the British glam rock band “Geordie.”In December of 1972, Geordie released their debut song, “Don’t Do That,” which made it into the Top 40 in the UK. The band had even more success with hit songs such as “All Because of You” (which peaked at number 10 on the UK Songs Chart in April 1973) and “Can You Do It” (which peaked at number 20 in the UK Singles Chart in July 1973).

Johnson released his lone solo song, “I Can’t Forget You Now,” while still a band “Geordie” member in January 1976. After the band ‘Geordie’ published their album ‘Save the World’ in 1976, he decided to leave the band. In 1978 ‘Geordie’ dissolved. It was ultimately reformed in 1980 by Johnson with a new lineup, and Johnson was the sole original band member at that time.

The band, also known as “Geordie II,” entered into a recording deal at the beginning of 1980. However, in March of 1980, Johnson got a phone call asking him if he would be interested in auditioning for the lead vocalist job at AC/DC. This position had become empty due to the passing of singer Bon Scott in February of that same year. Johnson said that he would be interested in the audition. It just so happened that Scott complimented Johnson’s performance to the other band members when he saw Johnson singing for Geordie at one point.

Johnson was ultimately chosen to be the band’s main singer after the band considered several other options. This decision began a new successful period for AC/DC. On April 1, 1980, the band announced to the public that he would join them. He was sent to the Bahamas, where he collaborated at the Compass Point Studios with Angus Young, Malcolm Young, Cliff Williams, and Phil Rudd on the band’s debut album with him, which was named “Back in Black.”

The album was a tremendous critical and economic success upon its debut on July 25, 1980, selling an estimated 50 million copies worldwide and emerging as one of the best-selling albums ever. The success of the album that came before it was followed by AC/DC’s subsequent album, which featured Johnson as the main singer and was named “For Those About to Rock We Salute You” and was released on November 23, 1981.

It was the first album released by the band to reach the top spot on the Billboard album chart in the United States, where it remained there for three weeks after getting that position. Johnson’s solo career began with recording the album “Strange Man,” published in 1982 by the MCA label and included a collection of 10 songs recorded by the Geordies between 1973 and 1976.

In the years that followed, he served as the main singer for AC/DC, during which time the band released several additional commercially successful albums, such as “Blow Up Your Video” (1988), “Who Made Who” (1986), “Flick of the Switch” (1983), and “Who Made Who.” In 1989, the band’s most recent album, the last to contain Johnson’s lyrical contributions, was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental category.

The album “The Razors Edge,” published on September 21, 1990, is remembered as one of AC/DC’s best works and features lead vocal contributions from Brian Johnson. The album that was responsible for such successful songs as “Are You Ready,” “Thunderstruck,” and “Moneytalks” was certified five times platinum in the United States, reached the number two spot on the Billboard 200 list, and remained on the chart for 77 consecutive weeks. Additionally, the album ascended to the number four spot on the charts in the United Kingdom.
