Eddie Izzard Bio

Eddie Izzard, a British comedian, and actor, is well-known for his ability to deftly blend fun and incisive observational comedy, which he often enhances with surreal imagery and delivers in a stream-of-consciousness manner. She has done standup comedy in various languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, and Arabic, and she has completed well over one hundred marathons, many of which were held on consecutive days to collect money for charitable causes.

Izzard was raised in what was then the Aden Colony but is now the city of Aden, Yemen, where she was born in 1962 to a nurse and an accountant. In 1963, they uprooted their lives and relocated to Bangor, Ireland, where they remained for four years until relocating once again, this time to Skewen, Wales. Izzard’s mother passed away from cancer when she was only six years old; shortly after her mother’s passing, she and her elder brother were placed in a boarding school. These kinds of situations will eventually form the basis of her humorous character.

Izzard first had an interest in performing at the age of seven when she went to see a play. She was also intrigued by the writing aspect of the business, and when she was having problems securing roles in school plays, she turned to comedy to appear on stage. Izzard started at Sheffield University 1980 to pursue a degree in Accounting and Financial Management with Mathematics, but her passion was already firmly planted in the comic world. She then spent the next year and a half writing for and performing in various undergraduate comedy shows, one of which earned her a primo spot at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. By the beginning of 1984, Izzard had dropped out of college, relocated to London, and worked as a street performer in Covent Garden with her friend Rob Ballard.

Within three years, Izzard had quickly risen to prominence on the London club scene and had made her debut at London’s Comedy Store. In 1991, she appeared on a televised benefit for people living with HIV/AIDS, contributing to another surge in her fame. Izzard’s first standup comedy special, which debuted in 1993 and was titled Live at the Ambassadors, was compiled from three performances he gave at the West End club throughout a four-month run. The following year, he landed the central part in the stage adaptation of David Mamet’s drama The Cryptogram, in addition to filming his second comedy special, Unrepeatable.

After making her theatrical debut in the title role in Marlowe’s Edward II in 1995, she made her third standup special, titled Definite Article, in 1996. The Shaftesbury Theatre in Camden was the location where it was recorded. By then, she had already been in a few TV movies and short films, and she had just made her debut in a feature film, a star-studded thriller about espionage called The Secret Agent. 1997 saw the publication of yet another special titled “Glorious.” After the popularity of that performance, she went on to play parts in the films Velvet Goldmine, directed by Todd Haynes, and The Avengers, a British espionage movie, both released in 1998.

Izzard’s career took off with the release of the 1998 HBO comedy unique Dress to Kill, which went on to win Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing in a Variety, Music, or Comedy Program as well as Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Comedy Program. This was Izzard’s big break in the United States. The ever-familiar “cake or death” skit was a part of it. Before she returned with her sixth standup special, 2002’s Circle, a show that had sold out theaters throughout the United States, she had movie parts such as Tony P. in Mystery Men (1999) and a stint as Charlie Chaplin in Peter Bogdanovich’s The Cat’s Meow (2001).

Both roles came after she had been in movies such as Mystery Men (1999) and The Cat’s Meow (2001). It was also the year when Dress to Kill was made available on DVD in the United States (through Anti/Epitaph), making it Izzard’s very first video release in the United States. 2003 saw the release of yet another special titled “Sexie.” The latter was recorded in Eastbourne, the city her father called home. During the same year, she also played in Peter Nichols’ production of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg on Broadway. It led to his being nominated for a Tony Award in the category of Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play.

Late in 2004, Laughing Stock Records’ catalog releases of Unrepeatable, Definite Article, and Glorious concurrently appeared in the Top Ten of Billboard’s Comedy Albums list, with Glorious occupying the number one slot. Unrepeatable and Definite Articles also landed in the Top Ten. In the same year, she also appeared in the film Ocean’s Twelve, directed by Steven Soderbergh, and she reprised her role in the sequel Ocean’s Thirteen, released in 2007. In 2007, she appeared with Minnie Driver in The Riches, which FX produced. 2008 the show was given the go-light for a second season. In 2009, Izzard released her first standup comedy special in the previous six years, titled Stripped (Laughing Stock).

Izzard started his seven weeks of back-to-back marathons in July 2009 to earn money for Comic Relief’s Sport Relief fundraising. Before this, Izzard had little experience running and had trained for five weeks. She was successful in both athletics and marketing; over the next several years, she participated in several similar charitable activities. After the early 2011 release of her following comedy collection, Live at Madison Square Garden, via Largo/Epitaph; she went on to get parts on television shows, including United States of Tara and Bullet in the Face, in addition to providing her voice for the character Sir Miles Axelrod in Disney-Pixar’s Cars 2.

The year 2013 saw the release of her ninth standup special, titled Force Majeure, and the establishment of a recurring role on NBC’s Hannibal. This particular performance brought her to five different continents. It featured some evenings in which she performed not one but three other concerts, each of which was given in a foreign language. When the tour stopped in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 2017, it completed its journey through all 50 states.

In 2017, Izzard’s performance as Voldemort in The Lego Batman cinema may be seen and heard at cinema theaters. In June of that year, her book, Believe Me: A Book of Love, Death, and Jazz Chickens, was published by Michael Joseph in the United Kingdom and Blue Rider Press in the United States. She had previously attempted to earn a place on the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party but was unsuccessful. In 2018, she was temporarily appointed runner-up to Christine Shawcroft when Shawcroft resigned from her job.

Izzard voiced a character for the animated series Green Eggs and Ham on Netflix in 2019, and he had a supporting part in the film The High Note in 2020 before he appeared as a lead in the movie Six Minutes to Midnight starring Judi Dench in the same year. In January 2021, she raised a significant amount of money for various charitable organizations by running the equivalent of 31 marathons in as many days, all performed inside on a treadmill owing to the COVID-19 epidemic.
