John R. Settle is a coach in the American Football League and a former player. He is presently the running backs coach for the Rice Owls for the Rice University football team. The National Football League (NFL) was his professional football league, and he played running back for the team. In Reidsville, North Carolina, Settle received his high school education at Rockingham County High School.
While he was playing college football for the Appalachian State Mountaineers, he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Atlanta Falcons. He played with the Falcons from 1987 to 1990. After that, he went on to play for the Washington Redskins, where he won a Super Bowl in each of his last two seasons.
Following a season in which he rushed for a career-high 1,024 yards and seven touchdowns, he was chosen to participate in the Pro Bowl. In the history of the National Football League, he was the first undrafted running back to carry for more than one thousand yards in a single season. One of the first members of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, Settle was a founding member of the Pi Nu chapter.

An undrafted free agent, Settle signed with the Atlanta Falcons and went on to play in the National Football League for a total of six seasons. In one of his first four seasons with Atlanta, which spanned from 1987 to 1990, he was selected for the Pro Bowl in 1988.
That year, he racked up 1,594 yards of offense (1,024 running and 570 receiving), and he also made history by being the first undrafted free agent in the history of the National Football League to dash for 1,000 yards in a single season. Both of his last two seasons were spent in Washington, where he was a member of the squad that won the Super Bowl in 1991 on behalf of Washington.
When John first started his coaching career, he was working as the running backs coach for the squad at his alma university in the year 1994. In the National Football League (NFL), Settle served as an offensive assistant coach for three years, from 1995 to 1997, with the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Ravens (when the Ravens relocated).
During that time, he worked under the direction of head coaches Bill Belichick and Ted Marchibroda. In the years between 1998 and 2005, Settle served as a running backs coach at Fresno State, where he coached six players who rushed for 1,000 yards. He coached several players, including Jaime Kimbrough, Paris Gaines, Derrick Ward, Rodney Davis, Dwayne Wright, Bryson Sumlin, and Wendell Mathis, among others. It was in 2006 that he accepted the position of running backs coach at Wisconsin, where he remained until 2010 when he started coaching again in the National Football League.
During the years 2011 and 2012, John served as the running backs coach for the Panthers in the state of Carolina. The year 2013 saw his return to Cleveland when he served as the running backs coach for the Browns. In 2014, he made his comeback to coaching at the college level at Pitt, where he was responsible for guiding James Conner to accolades as the ACC Player of the Year for 2014.
After that, he went back to Wisconsin, where he worked as a running backs coach under the direction of Paul Chryst, from the year 2015 to the year 2020. This individual tutored several players, including Corey Clement, Dare Ogunbowale, and Jonathan Taylor, among others. When John moved to the Southeastern Conference in 2021, he took a position at Kentucky as the running backs coach and co-special teams coordinator for the club. Following his departure from Kentucky, Settle was offered a position as the running backs coach at Rice in March of 2023.
