Sean Payton Bio

Payton was born on December 29, 1963, in San Mateo, California, although he spent most of his childhood in Naperville, Illinois. Meghan is Payton’s daughter, while Connor is Payton’s son. Payton has two children. Sean Payton has established himself as one of the National Football League’s most successful coaches since he was appointed as the head coach of the New Orleans Saints in 2006. He guided the Saints to eight appearances in the playoffs, six wins in the NFC South division, and the franchise’s first World Championship in 2009, which they achieved by defeating the Indianapolis Colts by a score of 31–17 in Super Bowl XLIV.

The 139 victories that Payton has accumulated as a head coach in the NFL over both the regular season and playoffs place him 26th all-time. His total record is 139-84 (.623) and includes eight playoff victories, which is particularly impressive given that the organization had just one postseason success before his arrival. Payton has the club’s most victory total and the highest winning %. Payton has led teams to six division titles, eight seasons with ten or more victories, and two times to the top seed in the NFC. In addition, Payton’s teams have won the leading source in the NFC twice.

Payton starts the 2020 season continuing to represent the Saints as an example of stability not just within the NFC South, where he is the longest-tenured head coach inside the division, but also across the NFL, as only Bill Belichick (2000) from New England’s Patriots has been with his club longer than Payton has been with the Saints.

Payton is also one of just nine current coaches who have won a Super Bowl with their teams under their direction. Belichick, Seattle’s Pete Carroll, Oakland’s Jon Gruden (with Tampa Bay in 2002), Baltimore’s John Harbaugh, Dallas’ Mike McCarthy (with Green Bay in 2010), Philadelphia’s Doug Pederson, Kansas City’s Andy Reid, and Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomlin are the others. Belichick is the only coach to win five Super Bowls as a head coach.

Since his debut in the NFL, Payton has been in charge of the league’s most productive offense. Under his direction, the Saints have finished first in the company in terms of net yards per game in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, and 2016. These are the only six occasions the Saints have been first in the league regarding the offense. The Saints have had the third-longest stretch (14 seasons) of any NFL team since the AFL and NFL merged in 1970 of consistently ranking in the top 10 offensively since Payton took over as head coach of the team.

At least 45 points have been scored by the Saints 25 different times during the franchise’s history, with Payton being the head coach for 21 of those instances. Regarding defensive performance, New Orleans has twice (in 2010 and 2013) finished in the top five. He has selected 63 players in the Pro Bowl, including a franchise-record 11 players in 2019. Additionally, he and his coaching staff have been awarded the privilege of guiding the NFC squad after the conclusion of the 2006 and 2017 seasons.

The 2019 Saints won 13 games, including seven on the road, both for the second season in a row, and secured the NFC South division championship for the third season. This was accomplished by the quarterback back Drew Bbringingngive games during the season. His six titles in his division place him in a three-way tie for third place among current head coaches. The Saints’ eight turnovers in a single NFL season established a new record for the league, and their turnover ratio of +13 was good for second place.

Additionally, New Orleans ranked third in the NFL in terms of sacks (51), tied for third in terms of scoring (28.6 points per game), and ranked fourth in terms of opponent running yards per game (91.3 pg). NFL writer Rick Gosselin’s yearly comprehensive rankings said the particular team’s division finished in the top position. An Associated Press All-Pro team selection was given to a club-record six different members of the Saints football team: LB Demario Davis, special teams cornerback J.T. Gray, comprehensive receiver/return specialist Deonte Harris, defensive end Cameron Jordan, offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk, and wide receiver Michael Thomas.

The Saints set a new record by having 11 players selected for the Pro Bowl. With a season that broke several records, Thomas was named the Offensive Player of the Year by the AP NFL. In his fourth season, he won the NFL receiving championship for the second year in a row. He set league records with 149 catches, a club record with 1,725 receiving yards, and scored nine touchdowns. With 15.5 sacks, Jordan established a new career best and ranked third in the NFL. Brees became the all-time leader in scoring throws for the National Football League (NFL) with 27 touchdown passes, just four interceptions, and a career-high 116.3 passer rating on the day he set the record for most touchdown passes completed.

TE Jared Cook has nine touchdown receptions and grabbed 43 passes for 705 yards and an average of 16.4 yards per catch. RB Alvin Kamara is the first player in Saints history to accomplish it in his first three seasons, and he just became the second player in franchise history to do so with three straight seasons of 1,300 total yards from scrimmage. In 2018, Payton led the Saints to back-to-back division victories for the first time in franchise history. They won the NFC South with a record of 13-3, including 7-1 on the road, and secured the right to play their playoff games at their home stadium.

The Black and Gold were able to advance to the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 2009 because of outstanding performances on offense, defense, and special teams. The offense finished third in the league in scoring (31.5 points per game), first in rushing touchdowns (26), and sixth in rushing yards (126.6 yards per game). The 61 touchdowns scored by New Orleans were tied for the second-most in the league, while the seven interceptions committed by the signal-callers were tied for the second-fewest.

The Saint’s defense finished in second place in terms of opponent rushing yards per game (80.2 average) and opponent rushing yards per carry (3.6 average), while they tied for fifth place in terms of sacks with 49. The Saints topped the National Football League in net punting average with 43.2 yards per punt, while their covering units allowed just 60 yards on punt returns, which was a league-low and the seventh-lowest total since 1978.

Brees completed 364 of 489 passes for 3,992 yards, 32 touchdowns, just five interceptions, and a league-best and career-high 115.7 rating to become the all-time leader in passing yardage for the NFL. His completion percentage of 74.4 was an NFL record. Thomas led the NFL with 125 receptions, which he turned into 1,405 yards and nine touchdowns. Kamara established a new franchise record with 14 running touchdowns, equaling the club record with 18 total touchdowns. He also had the most yards gained from scrimmage (1,592) in the team’s history.

During the regular season and the playoffs, Jordan led the Saints in takedowns with 12, while CB Marshon Lattimore had the most takeaways of any Saints player with seven. On special teams, P Thomas Morstead had a league-best 43.2 net punting average, while K Wil Lutz set a club record by kicking a field goal in the club’s 26 straight games. There will be eight Saints players representing the NFC in the Pro Bowl.

The 2017 Saints finished with an 11-5 record, earning them a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2013. This accomplishment was made possible by a team led offensively by Drew Brees and defensively by Cameron Jordan. The Saints also had seven players named to the Pro Bowl and four draft selections named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team, two more than any other club.

The Saints became the first club since 1967 to have the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and the Defensive Rookie of the Year on its roster. Kamara and Lattimore won their respective awards. New Orleans, one of the three teams who qualified for the NFC South playoffs, finished first in the division by claiming victories over Carolina (11-5) and Atlanta (10-6) and then went on to win the Wild Card game against Carolina by a score of 31-26 to proceed to the Divisional Playoff round.
