Martha Helen Stewart is a well-known American retail entrepreneur, author, and television personality. She was born on August 3, 1941, in the United States. She succeeded as the creator of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, centered on home and hospitality, via several economic activities, including publishing, television, retailing, and online shopping.
She is the author of many books that became New York Times bestsellers, the publisher of Martha Stewart Living magazine, and the host of two television shows that were syndicated throughout the country: Martha Stewart Living, which aired from 1993 to 2004, and The Martha Stewart Show, which aired from 2005 to 2012.
Stewart was found guilty of criminal charges in connection with the ImClone stock trading case in 2004, and she was released from federal prison in March 2005 after serving a sentence of five months. They tied the knot in July of 1961. One year after their wedding, she enrolled at Barnard College again to get her degree with a dual concentration in history and architectural history. During this time, Andrew Stewart established a publishing company and became CEO of numerous publishing houses. The Stewarts uprooted their lives and relocated to Westport, Connecticut.
They bought and renovated a farmhouse on Turkey Hill Road that had been built in 1805, which would later serve as the inspiration for the television studio used by Martha Stewart Living. Throughout the project, Stewart’s knack for refurbishing and redecorating was fully displayed. In 1976, Martha Stewart and Norma Collier, a friend of Stewart’s from her days as a model, launched a catering company in the basement of Stewart’s home.
The business endeavor was a success almost immediately. Still, things turned nasty when Collier accused Stewart was difficult to deal with and working as a caterer. Shortly afterward, Stewart acquired Collier’s share of the firm. Stewart was also the manager of a gourmet food store called the Market Basket. Still, after having a dispute with the proprietors of the mini-mall, she was thrown out of her position there and eventually launched her shop.
Andrew had risen through the ranks to become the president of the prestigious publishing company Harry N. Abrams, Inc. In 1977, he was the one who was responsible for the publication of the English-language version of The Secret Book of Gnomes series, which was written by Dutch writers Wil Huygen and Rien Poortvliet. The series was an instant runaway hit and was included on The New York Times Best Seller list.
He hired Stewart’s firm to provide the catering for the book release party, and while there, Stewart had the opportunity to meet Alan Mirken, the head of Crown Publishing Group. After being wowed by Stewart’s skills as a cook and hostess, Mirken contacted her to collaborate on writing a cookbook that would include recipes and photographs of events that Stewart has organized. Entertaining was published on December 13, 1982, as her debut book. Elizabeth Hawes was the ghostwriter for this book.
After the success of Entertaining, Martha Stewart released several additional books under the publishing imprint of Clarkson Potter. These books include Martha Stewart’s Quick Cook (1983), Martha Stewart’s Hors d’Oeuvres (1984), Martha Stewart’s Pies & Tarts (1985), and Weddings (1987). Elizabeth Hawes also ghostwrote weddings.
