He has peaked in both mainstream and current Christian music charts. “Place in This World” reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1991, marking his most significant achievement in the mainstream music industry. Throughout his career, he has been responsible for the sale of more than 18 million records.
Smith is the recipient of many awards, including the American Music Award, the Grammy Award, and the Dove Award, which he has received 45 times. His substantial impact on the Christian music genre earned him the “Golden Note” Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) in 1999. In 2014, the organization recognized him as the “cornerstone of Christian music” for his contributions to the genre.

In 1981, when Smith was playing keyboards for Higher Ground, he was signed as a writer to Meadowgreen Music.
