Trombone Shorty Bio

Troy Andrews, a trombone, songwriter, bandleader, author, and philanthropist from New Orleans, goes by the stage name Trombone Shorty. A musical genius from a young age, he made his debut with Bo Diddley when he was four years old, led his brass band when he was six years old and toured with Lenny Kravitz when he was thirteen years old. Andrews has an unmistakable voice that can go from warm and sighing to sweet and angry in an instant.

He can play the brass band repertoire both literally and creatively, incorporating elements of funk, jazz, rock, hip-hop, soul, and blues into his creations. In 2002, his first album, Swingin’ Gate, was released by Trombone Shorty. Backatown, his breakout album for Verve Forecast in 2010, was followed by For True in 2011 and Say That to Say This in 2013, both of which were released by big labels. They were all critically acclaimed and commercially successful modern jazz albums.

Andrews established the Trombone Shorty Foundation and gave high-quality instruments to local schools and people as a result of his intense devotion to his Treme area. He released Trombone Shorty in 2015. His 2017 album Parking Lot Symphony, released on Blue Note, topped the current jazz charts for seven weeks. In 2018, Andrews released The 5 O’Clock Band, her second children’s book. In 2022, he released Lifted, his second studio album with Blue Note.

Andrews came into this world in 1986 in New Orleans as the seventh child of a famous musical family. His grandpa, Jessie Hill, was a well-known R&B singer in the area, and his elder brother, James “12” Andrews, was a jazz trumpeter who had a big influence on him. At the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, performing with Bo Diddley, Andrews made his professional music debut at the tender age of four, but he had already started composing music at an early age.

He became proficient in many instruments, including the trombone, trumpet, tuba, organ, and drums. However, he ultimately settled on the trombone, which gave him his moniker at the time—the horn was larger than he was. Even at the tender age of six, he took charge of the neighborhood brass bands. He was so far ahead of his time that a bar in the Tremé area was called Trombone Shorts when he was only eight years old.

His brother Darnell, who was similarly gifted on trombone, was shot and died in 1995 when he was nine years old. His mother was inconsolable after the incident. James Andrews entrusted his bright younger brother Shorty to his manager and friend, the late entrepreneur Susan Lovejoy Scott, out of concern for his safety in an escalatingly dangerous area.

Andrews was managed and mentored by Lovejoy Scott, who came from a rich and influential family in New Orleans when he was a student at NOCCA. His exposure, composure, and professionalism were all gifts from her care, and she spared him the perils that befell many of his local peers.

Among the high school students who have graduated from NOCCA’s musical education program are Andrews, Harry Connick, Jr., Nicholas Payton, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, and Nicholas Payton. Among the many instructors Andrews studied with at NOCCA were Clyde Kerr, Jr., Kent Jordan, and others in the areas of music theory, ear training, and instrumental teaching.

Wynton Marsalis conducted the network’s nationally televised tribute to Louis Armstrong in 2003, and he was also selected as one of five young artists to be featured in a PBS television program that same year. Andrews has played outside of his hometown with groups like Green Day and U2 and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Performing at the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Istanbul Jazz Festival, and the Vienna Jazz Festival are just a few of his international appearances; he has also toured widely across Europe and Cuba.

Andrews’ third and last album for Verve, was out in September 2013. On this album, which he co-produced with Raphael Saadiq, Andrews delved even further into a style that drew from R&B and NOLA funk. It was number one on the current jazz albums list for almost a year and stayed there for six weeks. His subsequent appearances included 2014’s Uptown Special, Mark Ronson’s smash album. In 2015, he made his feature film debut voice acting the role of instructor Miss Othmar in the animated Peanuts Movie.

Andrews also finished and released his first children’s book in 2015. The book was published by Abrams Books and included illustrations by Bryan Collier; its working title was Trombone Shorty. The next year, it was selected as a Caldecott Honors Book. Guest performances on albums by Mindi Abair, Dierks Bentley, Bettye LaVette, and French rapper/producer Nekfeu were among Andrews’ many high-profile appearances in the years that followed. Parking Lot Symphony, Andrews’ 2017 album released on Blue Note Records, included the song “Here Come the Girls.”

Chris Seefried served as producer for the record, which included compositions by Allen Toussaint and the Meters, two New Orleans music icons. Leo Nocentelli and Ivan Neville were special guests. The album was number one on the jazz album chart for almost 30 weeks and number one on the current jazz chart for over a month. The 5 O’Clock Band, the trombonist’s second children’s book, was released the following year by Abrams Books. Bryan Collier was once again the illustrator.
