Tegan Nox, whose real name is Steffanie Rhiannon Newell, is a Welsh professional wrestler who rose to fame during her tenure with WWE. She has wrestled professionally under the WWE’s NXT brand and is a contracted WWE wrestler. She has battled against notable figures such as Lana Austin, Mercedes Martinez, and Vanessa Borne; her given name is Stephanie Newell.
Nixon Newell was her ring name while she fought for the British indie circuit, where she was best famous for promotions like Attack! Fight Club: Pro, What Culture Pro Wrestling, Progress Wrestling, and Pro Wrestling. When Tegan was younger, he was a footballer who tried out for Cardiff City and Wales’s national team. However, her opportunity to play for Wales’ Under-16 squad was cut short when she hurt her knee when she was 13 years old.
In subsequent years, she discovered a wrestling academy in Port Talbot, where she trained with Dave Stewart and “Wild Boar” Mike Hitchman. As part of the 2021 Draft, Nox was selected for the Raw brand, while Shotzi stayed with SmackDown, thereby terminating their team.
In the Welsh town of Bargoed, some fifteen miles north of Cardiff, Steffanie Newell came into this world on November 15, 1994. When Newell was a small girl, she was a football player for several local clubs. She tried out for Cardiff City and the Welsh national team at the same time. Her knee injury, which she sustained when she was 13 years old, prevented her from making the Wales Under-16 squad. At the age of sixteen, she announced her intention to retire from football and all sports altogether, claiming a loss of interest in the activity and a knee injury as her reasons.
She started training with Dave Stewart and “Wild Boar” Mike Hitchman at a professional wrestling school in Port Talbot not long after she left football. She attributed much of her drive to following in her late grandfather’s footsteps and becoming a professional wrestler. Along with football, she was also a netball and tag rugby player. Even though Newell spent most of her childhood on the football field, she became a fan of professional wrestling when she was five years old. Her favorite female wrestler and ideal opponent is Molly Holly.
Tegan Nox first became interested in professional wrestling when she was five years old; she lists Molly Holly as her idol and ideal opponent among female wrestlers. While competing for an all-expenses-paid vacation on Challenge TV, she made a single cameo as a fan on IMPACT Wrestling’s 2013 pay-per-view Slammiversary XI.
Then, in July 2014, she made her Attack! Pro Wrestling debut, appearing three times on the same program. On January 24, 2015, she made her Luchadora The Explorer debut, teaming up with Brookes in a defeat against The Anti-Fun Police, who were represented by Damian Dunne and Ryan Smile. On February 14th, she returned to the ring as a Luchadora and won an invited scramble match.
She made her Progress Wrestling debut on August 28, 2016, by beating Alex Windsor. On November 27, she competed in and won the Natural Progression Series IV Tournament, where she faced Katey Harvey in the opening round. After losing to Veda Scott in her debut at Volume 81 of the American all-female promotion Shimmer Women Athletes, she went on to lose to Nicole Matthews the following day at Volume 82. She beat Scott at volume 84 in Shimmer, her first victory.
She made her debut for What Culture Pro Wrestling (WCPW) on July 27, 2016, at Loaded #5, when she beat Bea Priestley; however, the next day, she was defeated by Priestley. Stardom, an all-female organization, sent Newell on her first tour of Japan in January 2017. In their opening match, Newell and Kay Lee Ray beat Oedo Tai (Kris Wolf and Viper). On January 29th, Newell faced up against Kairi Hojo for the Wonder of Stardom Championship; Hojo won with a diving elbow.
Substituting the ring name Tegan Nox, Newell defeated Zatara on August 8th, 2018, after being named as a contestant in the 2018 Mae Young Classic. In the third episode of “NXT UK” airing on October 3rd, Nox lost in a non-title match after she began a rivalry with Kay Lee Ray, who was the NXT UK Women’s Champion. Along with numerous other NXT performers, Nox and Ripley invaded “SmackDown” and challenged Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville to a tag-team bout, which Nox and Ripley won.
By nightfall, Nox had joined Triple H and the rest of the NXT roster in their declaration of war on Raw and SmackDown, pledging to triumph in the Survivor Series brand wars. After a brief absence owing to a plot injury, she made her triumphant comeback on the January 15, 2020, edition of NXT, where she competed in a battle royal for the NXT Women’s Championship, losing to Kai’s interference and elimination.
While watching “NXT The Great American Bash” on July 1st, Nox became the top challenger for the NXT Women’s Championship after defeating Kai, LeRae, and Yim in a fatal four-way elimination match. While Nox faced up against reigning champion Io Shirai for the title on July 15th’s edition of “NXT,” Shirai emerged victorious. Upon Tegan’s return after a nearly ten-month hiatus at The Great American Bash on July 6, 2021, LeRae and Indi Hartwell were defeated by Io Shirai and Zoey Stark for the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship. Nox took it out on LeRae after the game.
On July 9th’s “SmackDown” broadcast, she debuted on the main roster with Shotzi as Shotzi & Nox, and they defeated Natalya and Tamina, the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions, in a non-title contest. Despite their repeated tag-team victories against Natalya and Tamina, the duo never got their shot at a title match. As part of the 2021 Draft, she was selected for the Raw brand, while Shotzi stayed on SmackDown, dissolving their partnership. On November 18th, she was let go from her WWE contract despite never making an appearance on Raw
