Aaron Charles Donald is a defensive lineman for the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League (NFL). Donald was born on May 23, 1991, and now plays for the Los Angeles Rams. He participated in collegiate football at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was honored as an All-American by every single voting committee. The Los Angeles Rams chose him in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
In addition to being selected for the Pro Bowl in his nine seasons and earning first-team All-Pro honors seven times, he is widely regarded as one of the best defensive players in the sport’s history. He holds the record for most Defensive Player of the Year awards with three. In addition, Donald was a part of the squad that ended up winning Super Bowl LVI.
Donald, a native Pittsburgher, was raised in the city’s Lincoln–Lemington–Belmar district as the middle child of three siblings in a family that was part of the city’s working class. The man’s father started him at the gym to instill more discipline and routine into his son’s life. In later years, Donald would acknowledge that he had been “lazy as a kid.” By the time he was 12, he and his father would get up at 4:30 and work out for over two hours in the home’s basement gym that his father had built for the family.
Donald went to Penn Hills High School, where he participated in high school football under the direction of Ron Graham, the head football coach. As a senior, he finished with 63 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks, earning him a spot on the first team of All-State Class AAAA for each of his last two seasons of high school football. In addition, Donald began the game as an offensive guard.
According to Rivals.com, he was ranked as the 37th-best defensive lineman in the country and was regarded as a prospect worthy of three stars. Despite scholarship offers from other schools like Toledo, Akron, and Rutgers, he chose to attend his alma mater, Pittsburgh. As a true freshman, Donald served as a reserve defensive end for Pitt and participated in all 13 of the team’s games. He finished the game with 11 tackles, three of which were for losses and two sacks.
Donald’s breakthrough season came in 2011 when he was a sophomore and had just gotten into the starting lineup. He had an outstanding season. In addition to being chosen to the Big East’s second team, he was recognized for his 47 tackles, 16 of which went for a loss of yardage, 11 sacks, and one forced fumble. He was named to the first team of All-Big East after recording 64 tackles as a junior, including 18.5 for a loss, 5.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. His performance earned him an accolade.
During his last year of eligibility, he established himself as one of the most productive defensive players in the NCAA. He finished with 59 stops, including a career-high 28.5 for loss, 11 sacks, and four forced fumbles, in addition to his other impressive statistics. He was selected as the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and was selected as an All-American by every coach in the league.
Donald was signed to a rookie deal with the Rams on June 16, 2014, worth $10.13 million over four years and was fully guaranteed. In addition, the agreement provided a signing bonus of $5.69 million and a fifth-year option. Donald made his first appearance in a game during the regular season for the Minnesota Vikings on September 7, 2014. He ended the game with four tackles despite the team’s 34–6 defeat.
The following week, he led his team to victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by making three tackles and recording his first sack in the National Football League. On October 13, 2014, he started his first career against the San Francisco 49ers and ended the game with four solo tackles. During that game, he was also allowed to make his first career start. Donald was one of five first-year players chosen for the Pro Bowl in 2015, and he earned his spot by compiling 47 tackles, nine sacks, and two fumble recoveries.
Donald was honored with the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award and was selected for the NFL All-Rookie Team. In 2015, Donald started the season on the defensive line as a starting tackle. In the first game of the season, which the Los Angeles Rams played against the Seattle Seahawks, he ended with nine tackles and two sacks, contributing to the Rams’ victory in overtime by a score of 34–31.
As a result of his effort, he received the NFC Defensive Player of the Week award for the first time in his NFL career. Donald had a career-high three sacks while playing against the Detroit Lions in Week 14 on December 13, 2015. He had five tackles overall. After his effort against the Lions in 2015, he was awarded the title NFC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time that year.
On April 12, 2017, the Los Angeles Rams took advantage of the fifth-year option included in Donald’s contract. Due to a disagreement on his contract renewal, he did not attend training camp or the preseason. Because of his lack of participation, he racked up nearly $1.4 million in penalties, and for every game that he skipped, he lost one game check out of his regular income of $1.8 million.
Donald checked in with the Rams on September 9, 2017, and passed his physical exam; nonetheless, he did not participate in the season opener against the Indianapolis Colts, which the Rams won 46–9 despite not having him on the field. Donald played his first game of the season, a defeat to the Washington Redskins by a score of 20–27, and earned two tackles in the contest. The following week, the Rams played the San Francisco 49ers, and he helped secure a road victory for the team by recording three tackles and getting a sack on Brian Hoyer in the fourth quarter. The final score was 41–39.
