Kathy Najimy Bio

Kathy Najimy is an American actress, writer, and activist who came to popularity for her appearances as Mary Patrick in “Sister Act,” Mary Sanderson in “Hocus Pocus,” and the wicked queen Grimhilde in “Descendants.” Najimy is a native of New Jersey in the United States of America. She has also had a very successful career as an actor on television. ‘Chicago Hope,’ ‘Veronica’s Closet,’ and ‘Veep’ are just a few of the television shows she has starred that have brought her the most fame.

She is also well-known for her work as a voice actress, having lent her talents to animated shows such as “BoJack Horseman” and “King of the Hill,” as well as films such as “WALL-E” and “Scooby-Doo! Pirates Ahoy!” Kathy is highly known for her activist community work and acting career. She is a member of the ‘Time’s Up movement, a campaign against sexual harassment, and she has been a vocal champion for topics such as equal rights, civil rights, body image, LGBT rights, and AIDS awareness. In addition, she has been an advocate for problems such as equal rights, civil rights, body image, and LGBT rights.

The actress and activist have also contributed financially to several causes, including ‘The Feminist Majority Foundation’s’ campaign against gender inequality in Afghanistan and ‘V-Day,’ which is an organization that works to empower women. Her political allegiances are with the more progressive wing of the Democratic Party, and she is an outspoken critic of the policies of US President Donald Trump.

On February 6, 1957, Kathy Najimy debuted in San Diego, California. Her parents, who are of the Catholic faith and Lebanese heritage, are Fred Najimy and Samia Massery. She attended ‘Crawford High School’ for her education. Kathy Najimy began her career as an actress on stage, and she quickly rose to prominence on a national level after starring in the enormously successful comic piece “The Kathy and Mo Show” (1986), which included feminist undertones. However, this was not her first experience with a celebrity since she had been on television.

1981 the young actress and her family appeared on the ‘Family Feud’ game program together. She was awarded ten thousand dollars in prize money. In 1985, she was also a competitor in the “$25,000 Pyramid” game program, where she competed against others. She had a supporting part in the television movie ‘Walls of Glass, released the same year. The year 1991, she marked a turning point for Kathy. ‘The Kathy & Mo program: Parallel Lives’ was the name of the program that she and Mo Gaffney co-hosted.

The two individuals were honored with a “CableAce” award for providing the most outstanding performance in a comedy special. It was in the buddy police action thriller ‘The Hard Way’ (1991) that she made her professional debut in the film industry. The same year, she also appeared in the comedy picture ‘The Fisher King’ (1991). After that, Kathy was cast as Sister Mary Patrick in the 1992 film ‘Sister Act,’ which became her most well-known role.

A year later, she played the same character in the sequel to “Sister Act,” titled “Back in the Habit.” She then went on to play Mary Sanderson in the comedy-horror film ‘Hocus Pocus,’ which was released in 1993. Her performance in this film was met with widespread critical praise and commercial success. She played various roles during the first season of the comedy “Ellen,” which starred Ellen DeGeneres. However, that same year, she also featured in the movie “It’s Pat,” considered her least successful film.

After then, she continued to go back and forth between film and television roles. In 1995, ‘The Kathy & Mo Show: The Dark Side’ triumphantly returned to television. In the 1996 season of the medical drama Chicago Hope, she played the part of Dr. Barbara “Bix” Konstadt, which garnered her widespread critical praise. Kathy was nominated for two ‘OFTA Television Awards’ in recognition of her performance of Olive Massery in the comedy ‘Veronica’s Closet,’ which she began appearing in in 1997 and continued to do so until 2000.

After that, she tried her hand at voice acting with the cartoon series “Hey Arnold” (1997–1999) and the animated feature “Cats Don’t Dance” (1997). Both of these projects were successful. In addition, she provided the voice for the character of Peggy Hill, who received an award for her work in the animated series ‘King of the Hill’ (1997–2010). She was in several films, including ‘Hope Floats’ (1997) and ‘Nevada’ (1997). However, none of those films was a huge commercial success at the box office.

But 2001 was a better year for her, with movies like “The Wedding Planner” and “Rat Race” earning well at the box office. In the 2000s, Kathy solidified her reputation as a formidable talent in voice acting. She gave her voice to television shows, including ‘Stuart Little’ (2003) and movies like ‘Balto III: Wings of Change’ (2005), ‘And Scooby-Doo! Pirates Ahoy!’ (2006), and ‘Tom and Jerry: Shiver Me Whiskers’ (2006).

Her animated film “WALL-E,” which was released in 2008, was her most successful film in terms of box office earnings. The films ‘Step Up 3D’ (2010), ‘The Guilt Trip’ (2012), ‘Descendants’ (2015), and ‘Dumplin” (2018) are among the most well-known examples of her work in the film industry in recent years. Kathy has had a very successful career in the world of television. Some of her highly regarded television programs include ‘Veep’ (airing from 2014 to the present), ‘Younger’ (airing from 2015 to the present), ‘Unforgettable’ (airing from 2015 to 2016), ‘The President Show’ (2017), and ‘Good Witch’ (airing in 2019).

The role of Sister Mary Patrick, which Kathy Najimy played in the film series ‘Sister Act’ (1992) and ‘Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit’ (1993), is the one for which she is most well known. Box office receipts for the films totaled many millions of dollars. Her comedic timing earned her the ‘American Comedy Award for Funniest Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture’ in 1993.
