Ric Flair Bio
Ric Flair, popularly known as ‘The Nature Boy,’ is a former professional wrestler who is most known for his luxurious lifestyle, which includes an addiction to booze and women. He was formerly the face of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and World Championship Wrestling (WCW), and is widely recognized as one of the sport’s finest wrestlers.
Ric Flair was born Fred Phillips in Memphis, Tennessee, on February 25, 1949, to Luther and Olive Phillips. Richard Reid Fliehr and Kathleen Virginia Kinsmiller eventually adopted him from the Tennessee Children’s Home Society and named him Richard Morgan Fliehr. His biological father was a physician, and his biological mother was an actress. He subsequently relocated to Edina, Minnesota, with his new family, where he attended Wayland Academy. He was an avid student-athlete in high school, with a particular fondness for football, track, and wrestling.
He began wrestling as an amateur prior to enrolling at the University of Minnesota on a football scholarship and dropped out shortly after finishing his first year. While working as a bouncer at a bar, he met Olympic weightlifter Ken Patera, who connected him to Verne Gagne, the promoter of the American Wrestling Association (AWA). Gagne agreed to mentor Flair and enrolled him in his training program.
On August 28, 1971, Ric Flair married Leslie Goodman for the first time. Megan and David were born to the couple. They divorced in 1983 after a 12-year relationship. Flair married Elizabeth Harrell on August 27, 1983, the same year. Ashley and Reid were the couple’s two children. Elizabeth even made multiple appearances on WCW. However, the couple divorced in 2006.
Flair married Tiffany VanDemark on 27 May 2006. However, their marriage was brief, and they divorced in 2009. Flair married his fourth wife in the same year as his divorce from VanDemark, continuing the tradition. On November 11, he married Jacqueline “Jackie” Beems. This marriage, however, did not last long, and the pair divorced in 2014. Flair proposed to Wendy Barlow in July 2016.
Richard Morgan Fliehr joined Gagne’s wrestling camp near Minneapolis in 1971. He worked out with Greg Gagne’s son, Jim Brunzell, The Iron Sheik, and Ken Patera. He used the ring moniker ‘Ric Flair’ and wrestled his debut bout against George “Scrap Iron” Gadaski at Rice Lake, Wisconsin in December 1972. The match finished in a stalemate after ten minutes.
Flair left the AWA in 1974 and joined the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). On February 8, 1975, he won his first singles championship when he defeated Paul Jones for the NWA Mid-Atlantic TV Championship. Flair, Johnny Valentine “Mr. Wrestling I,” Tim Woods, Bob Bruggers, and promoter David Crockett boarded an aircraft that crashed in Wilmington, North Carolina, on October 4, 1975. The pilot was killed in the accident, while the others sustained serious injuries. Flair, then 26, had a back injury and was told he would never be able to wrestle again.
Flair, on the other hand, refused to give up and undertook extensive physical treatment in order to regain his footing. His efforts paid off, and within a year after the injury, he was back in the ring. In February 1976, upon his comeback, he fought Wahoo McDaniel. However, the injury forced him to alter his wrestling style, and he was forced to abandon his power brawling skills.
Ric Flair defeated Bobo Brazil to win the ‘NWA United States Heavyweight Championship’ on July 29, 1977. Flair reclaimed the belt five times over the following three years, defeating opponents like Ricky Steamboat, Roddy Piper, Mr. Wrestling, Jimmy Snuka, and Greg Valentine. In 1978, he faced up against Buddy Rodgers, the original ‘Nature Boy.’ To bolster his rivalry with Rodgers, Flair adopted the moniker ‘The Nature Boy,’ which stayed with him.
In early 1991, WCW president Jim Herd proposed that Flair modify his appearance and acquire the moniker ‘Spartacus’. Flair refused to accept Herd’s recommendation, which resulted in his dismissal and loss of the NCW title. In August 1991, Flair joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). He debuted with the ‘Big Gold Belt,’ referring to himself as ‘The Real World Heavyweight Champion,’ and went on to face WWF superstars Roddy Piper and Hulk Hogan.
On January 19, 1992, Flair won his first WWF Championship after beating 29 other wrestlers in the Royal Rumble event. On October 12, 1992, he lost his crown against Bret Hart. Flair returned to WCW in February 1993 as the brand’s new face after his brief tenure with the WWF. He defeated Barry Windham at Beach Blast to claim the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. He did, however, retain the championship for a brief while after WCW’s exit from the NWA in September 1993.
Flair defeated Sting in June 1994 to become the combined WCW International World Heavyweight and WCW World Champion. Ric Flair won the WCW World Championship twice between 2000 and 2001 when the business was acquired by the WWF. Flair subsequently took a brief hiatus from professional wrestling before returning to the WWF in November 2001. Flair was the on-camera co-owner of the WWF, according to the narrative, when Shane and Stephanie sold their shares in the business to him. He subsequently ceded custody of his on-camera persona to Vince McMahon.
Flair became a member of the ‘Evolution’ in 2003, with WWE superstars Triple H, Randy Orton, and Dave Batista. Flair won the World Tag Team Championship twice with Batista in 2003 and 2004. Flair was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on March 29, 2008, becoming the first active wrestler to do so.
On March 30, 2008, he announced his retirement from wrestling after a loss to Shawn Micheals at WrestleMania XXIV in Orlando, Florida. He does, however, make cameos in WWE on occasion, most notably to support his daughter Ashley, who goes by the ring moniker ‘Charlotte’.
